Do longer IDE cables have less data integrity than shorter cables? As in, would a 36" cable be more prone to data corruption or just less reliable than say, an 18" cable? I was just wondering, since longer cables would make wiring any case a bit easier.

I know it was a factor back in the IDE 33 days. I believe it’s less of a factor now but the longest I’ve seen is 36”. I believe anything longer would be a possible bad thing.

24 is the max suggested, but 36 usually works. The problem is usually that there are corruptions which get caught by error checking and the "packet" must be resent, causing a slowdown. Longer cables can make for slower transmissions, but not usually for more error-prone data files on disk.
 
no the max length is 18 by spec. this has never changed, but others think it has since non-compliant cables are common. one more reason for sata.
