IDE cable anomaly?

I recently purchased 2 AC Ryan FX IDE cables: http://www.acryan.com/_roundcables/ACR-RC32004.shtml and I am experiencing some very wierd things with my hard drive using them. I bought 2, so that I could use 2 HDDs and 2CD Drives. But for some reason, my hard drive (I am only running one hard drive and one CD drive right now. The hard drive is the primary master, the CD the secondary master) detects in bios, works fine, then Winblows 2000 says it cannot find a file it needs to boot once it starts to load. I took the cable off the hard drive, put in the old one, and it booted fine. Note that this whole time the CD drive was running perfectly on the second cable. I figured that the first FX cable I ordered must have been defective, because I tested the CD drive in Windows and it worked. So I did a cable swap, putting the FX cable from the CD drive to the hard drive instead, taking the old cable out, then putting the previously thought to be defective cable on the CD drive. Both detected fine in BIOS, but I got the SAME error in Windows as it loaded.

I then put back in the old cable on the Hard Drive and it worked fine, and the CD drive worked fine on the FX cable that I thought was defective.

What could be causing this? It seems impossible that a cable would work fine for one device and then cause errors on another... Do you think a reinstall would fix the problem?

(2/3 way down the page) That your two device connectors need to be at least 5" apart. Since the cable that you bought (judging from the images) does not adere to this standard, a lot of weird things can happen. If your drive works fine, but not with that cable, i'd say it is pretty clear where the fault lies.
 
Is your pirmary master drive a WD drive. Is it set for master with slave present, or is it set for single drive. I have seen WD drives do weird things like this b4.
 
It is a fujitsu laptop drive.

drizzt81, if this was the case, then why will it only work with the cd drive? Keep in mind I only have one device on each of the cables. There are no slaves in my current setup...
