Just wanted to share my i7 overclock experience. (Microcenter $200 i7-920)
I used my old h20 system from my qx6700 thats about 2.5 years old but still working good. 120-2 radiator, Fuzion block, if I remember right. 12GB of GSKILL 1600 RAM, Asus GENE II mobo.
With about 1.4V, I got the CPU to boot @ 4.5Ghz, but memtest wouldn't work. @ 4.4Ghz and 1.35V, memtest completed once I got the RAM voltage up to specified 1.6V. However, windows 7 RC wouldn't boot until I dropped the OC down to about 4.2Ghz. Prime 95 failed though, until I dropped the OC down to 4.1Ghz. Once that was stable, I began dropping voltage until prime failed. Final CPU V= 1.28. Final RAM speed is ~ 820Mhz. Once that was done, I renabled speedstep, and all that speed/V lowering stuff. Left HT enabled the whole time as I want to use it. More Prime95 testing and its good to go.
Idle temps are 27-32c, full load with prime 95 are low 70's. Load and idle temps are nearly the same as the old QX6700, maybe a bit cooler at idle.
The GENE II is a decent board, more OC options than you could know what to do with. The layout is OK, but a little cramped. I couldn't play with my SATA cables with the video card in. One thing I dont like about the Intel RAID setup is if you setup RAID, you cant boot off another non-RAID drive connected to the Intel controller. I ended up putting my boot drive off of the singe port JMicron controller. Overall im happy with the upgrade experience. The only thing ive tested so far is SupCom FA, and the CPU does quite a bit better than the old one. Still installing software and such.
