I have the chance to trade my msi gt70 for a desktop with a rampage iii board and i7 980x. Also has a 680 4g evga and 512gb ssd. Also a 27" monitor.

I'm not being stupid by trading am I?

I know this processor is awesome and the board but want to make sure I'm making the right choice.

Well that system is going to be more powerful than the MSI GT70, but you'll lose all portability. Also the monitor should be 1600P, which means it'll look better than your 17" 1080P display on the MSI.

It is an old setup for sure; you could probably piece together those parts used for less than $1500. So essentially I think it's more or less an even trade.

This is assuming your MSI has at least a 770m.

My msi has a 670mx.

The processor, although old, should perform better than my mobile i7 correct?

Well I don't know about "better" since that's such a relative term. In pure brute number crunching, then yes the 980x is a beast. Especially if you overclock it. Power consumption on the other hand goes to the mobile i7. S it depends on what "better" means to you.

Obviously the 680 is a lot more GPU than a 670m GPU.

If you're a gamer, I think you're getting the better end of the deal with that system unless you attend LAN parties and/or travel a lot.

Well once the mods see this they'll delete it. This technically falls under price checks and it's not allowed here. You'll need to subscribe to our subscription based forum called General Mayhem to get them.

Ok sorry! I wasn't sure, if need deleting than its fine. Thanks so much for the help!
