i7 920: Need help overclocking

Hello all,

I just built a new system with an i7 920 (stock cooling)
I want to overclock it, but don't really have any experience. I'm not looking for much, but I'd like to get 3.0 - 3.2 with stock cooling. Is this possible to reach and keep the voltages the same and not worry about my memory exceeding 1600?

the x58 boards seem to increase voltages on their own when overclocking. your vcore at stock should be at 1.04v which is lower than the factory vid of 1.21 i believe. the discrepancy is probably due to some power saving feature of the chipset. you can probably take the bclk right to 160mhz and restart. i'm willing to bet that the clock will hold without any issues.
 
It should be a very easy overclock for you to 3.2Ghz on the stock cooling. What motherboard are you using? I might be able to give you the exact settings you need to change. You should be able to do it though with everything on auto except for i would set the vCore (CPU voltage) to the stock voltage manually as well as setting the QPI/Vtt voltage to 1.2V and the DIMM voltage (memory) to 1.65V or less depending on what your memory is rated for. Then just raise your BLCK clock to 160Mhz. You should be able to leave the QPI speed and the Uncore speed ratios set to auto unless you want to set them yourself.

The only time it would be running 1.04v is when you have the Intel power saving features of the CPU enabled and it's lowering the CPU speed and the VID automatically based on CPU load. He should be able to leave those Intel features enabled no problem at 3.2Ghz. But if he were planning for a high overclock I would disable them.
 
Yeah, I'm using the EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 X58 motherboard
and my memory is CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
 
To get to 3.2 you dont need to do anything but change the bclock to 160, set your ram speed and voltage manually and set the uncore manually.

bclock: 160
ram 2:10 8-8-8-24-74 1t 1.65v
uncore 20x

This will give you 3.2Ghz and 1600mhz ram.
