I bought an Athlon 1.4Ghz socket 462, 128mb PC133, heatsink, and mainboard from a guy that badly needed money for cheap.

I went home, plugged it in and shorted the power pins with my screwdriver. The fan came on, but nothing else. Keyboard lights did not come on, PCI/AGP videocards did not make the monitor come on, the PC speaker did not beep, the CPU did not get warm.

What bothers me, is that there is a CRAPLOAD of nearly dried-up thermal paste all over the cpu. I mean, the Cache chips are just coated like it were cake frosting. The whole stupid thing is like a cake, just gooped on there.

If the CPU were bad, shouldnt the mainboard still beep and whine, rather than come on in a "persistive vegitative state"? Could the thermal grease abuse cause the dead cpu / braindead mobo?

Im going back to the guy to get a refund, but he swears it worked before he took it out of the case.
