I need KVM advice

That should work fine. The only problem some cheap-o KVM switches have is that you have to be switched to the computer that is booting up so that the mouse and keyboard are detected. This shouldn't be a problem for you, you're likely not going to be rebooting the systems that often.

More expensive KVM switches send out a keyboard/mouse signal on all ports all the time, so that even if you're not switched over to a computer that is rebooting, it will still detect the keyboard and mouse attached.

I am using VNC over my home network to control 2 out of 4 PCs at home that are Folding. It works well and I have the motherboard power settings and Folding setup to restart after a restart or power hit.

They are in the basement with wireless USB adapters. Wireless router is 2 floors up in the computer room.

Just a thought.

I second the VNC solution....

VNC is cheaper (free) and it requires less hassle than KVM. If the machines are just going to sit there and fold most of the time, you don't really need to have the KVM hooked up to them as you won't be using them much.

Just my $.02

I'll third it...

I'll even throw in a link to it.

Some people prefer KVM's and that's fine. However, with over 20 boxes I just have the one monitor and no complaints. Its cross-platform too.

I was also looking around for a good kvm, I just dl'ed realvnc and it is awesome. I recommend vnc. Especially since the price is so good.

I like VNC too but if you're going to go kvm I'd follow the advice from Buckus and make sure you get a descent one. If you have a mouse that anything more than a basic 2 button mouse you could also loose functionality of the wheel/other buttons with a cheaper kvm when you switch back and forth. I have one right now that requires me to reboot my main rig if I switch to another machine because when I switch back the wheel dies and right click stops working. I can't switch away from a machine that's booting either or I won't have a keyboard or mouse when it comes up. Pretty frustrating.

Well I thought I'd wait a while to chime in.
RedShred - the KVM switch you showed is a kick butt price, but I would be aware of the potential problems with:
Switching
Mice
Booting
Cheap cables
I typically pay about $20 for a 2 port, on sale, with good cables.

When you are configuring computers they are very handy to have. I often am buillding a computer and trying to download drivers and tweaks on another computer sitting next to it, which is on the net. Saves a lot of space/cost on extra mice, kb's, monitors.

That said VNC is good if you don't run a flavor of Unix/X-Windows, which is better :)

I just picked up a Just Com JC-102CP from newgg for $16 plus shipping w/ a $16 Mail in Rebate!

No Sound Jack Just kvm and only 2-port But works good.

If you are still looking for one, i have an old one that I would send to you for the price of shipping, it is ps2 and is a mechanical 4 port switch. I have upgraded to a 8 port to fit inall my other boxen.

PM me and we can work out the details.
