I just got an ipod but computer doesn't recognize it

I just got a ipod... it works fine. When I install the software is where the problem occurs. I install the software fine but when I connect the ipod to my computer(windows XP) it can't fine the ipod. A window comes up asking to install hardware and I click 'next' but it can't find the correct software. I tried installing the software and connecting the ipod to another persons computer and it worked fine. I'm not sure what is wrong. Currently I've installed a new DVD drive and when ever I restart the computer it askes me if I want to install software for the DVD drive but when I put the disk in and tell it to install the software, nothing happens. I need halp.. Thanks.

let me ask a rudimentary question: you got the pc version correct not the mac version?

if yes to the latter than try to find new drivers on apple's site.

others will respond as well.

Just to make sure all drivers for your usb are working?

well the usb ports work for other things.... umm... I'll check apples website for updated drivers... but I don't know how the will help if my computer can't detect the ipod.
