so, in a sense, its the "lag" point? i dont understand, it says overheat temp is 120, but "hysterisis" is 102. i dont pay much mind to that number, just overall temp, but i have to look at it all the time, and wandered what it is.
 
That could be the thermal throttling point...I guess

That seems like the only logical choice for a name like that.

Or, it could be the point at which the CPU's operation is impaired due to heat. Maybe the point before thermal slowdown occurs to protect, but it's a point you wouldn't want to reach, nonetheless.
 
The Hysteresis point is used for controlling the cpu fan. It turns on when it hits the max allowable temperature and won't turn off until it hits the hysteresis temperature. This is so that the temp goes well below the fan turn on temp before turning off the fan. This is to prevent the fan from turning on and off rapidly as it would if the fan would turn off as soon as the temp went below the set turn on temp.

Okay, say your max temp is 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Now, let's say something happens and your temperature surges to 120 degrees. The hysterisis temperature is the temperature at which the overheat alarms will turn off. In other words, it's the temperature you consider to be the max safe temperature for your CPU.

That's where the term hysterisis comes in. When the temperature starts to fall or retard after proper cooling is applied, or the CPU utilization goes down, the temperatures cross the hysterisis temperature threshold to a safe level, and the alarms turn off.
 
so, basically...it is like a limit in a furnace, if too much heat builds up in the blower compartment, the furnace trips out on a limit. it will not allow operation until the temperature drops back to manufacturer specs. like that?

only in this case the only side effect is an alarm going off?

when my whole [h] trip started, i was pushing 140degrees-f on my p2 233 oc'ed to 292 ROFL...NO FANS, repeat, NO FANS working in my case. i then got my new case and now have 7fans going at once. i have cut my operating temps in half.
