Hyperthreading question

Just installed a 3.0 P4 in one of my boxes.......it posts at 1.5 ghz, but when I look at the General system tab in control panel it is recognized as a 3.0. From my understanding of HT this is correct.

In system information under system tools.......it is showing two processors at 1.5 ghz. As this machine is used for folding and light video editing, and as it seems very slow next to the 2.4 that was in it encoding a TV show, would it be better to disable HT in the bios and have it run as a single 3.0
 
well if you are encoding pure ghz will win out anyday. But if you are encoding while surfing the HT is suppose to help you multi task. So if this computer doesn't do anything but fold and encode don't use HT but if it is a general use pc use HT

 
confirms what I suspected...... :D .........since it sits and folds 24/7....and general surfing is done on a 2.4 Prescott...........and it encodes maybe 5 or 6 hours a week........damn the torpedoes and fold speed a head

 
Have you used Cpuz to verify that your memory and all other settings are set correctly? I've never heard of a HT cpu posting at 1.5ghz(Maybe they all post like that, and I'm just remembering the post screens wrong on my HT computers).

In reality all your intensive things should run at 3ghz even with hyperthreading on. If you have 2 intensive things going then they'll both take twice as long - so it'll seam like you're running it on a 1.5-1.7 ghz computer. I say 1.5-1.7 because the hyperthreading gives a 0-20% increase in speed to the apps. That being said Windows had an intial quirk where if ht was enabled everything would take twice as long - that should be fixed by now, but one of my MP3 ripping programs still doesn't like HT.

 
just tried rebooting with HT disabled.......still boots at 1.5.......System info is now showing one 1.5 processor....and at post is showing 15x100.......ideas...suggestions?
 
Problem solved.........ever feel like a dumb ass? :p Helps if the board you are using(MSI 7095) supports 800 mhz fsb processors........just stuck in a 533 2.8....and all is humming along merrily :D........damn now I have to build another box to support the 3.0 800 mhz Prescott....... :eek: ....runnin out of room :D
 
edit: oops -- missed your update while I was typing


What motherboard & version of windows are you running ? Some of my P4 motherboards have a bios setting for FSB . It sounds like you could be running at 1/2 speed because the FSB is set wrong....

My 478pin P4 3.0 shows 3.0 model (and my 3.16 mini-overclock) in the WinXP Home System tab.

Actually I have a MSI 865PE Neo 2 that I haven't cracked the seal on and a gig o PC3200 corsair and an ATI 9800 .....just need a case and powersupply............. :p
