Hyper V HD space usage?

Hyper v is set up and running on P.Server

I set up a V.Server in Hyper V. Set the disk space to Dynamically expanding disks. V.server use only 60gb. I check the P.Server and notice data_disk.vhd is using 240 GB. How come the V.Server is only using 60gb but seeing 240gb use by V.Server?

I had to edit and run compact to clean up the empty space. Now the data.disk.vhd is using 60gb.

P.Server- physical server
V.Server- virtual server
 
Let's just start by saying that dynamically expanding virtual disks are extremely bad for performance.

I don't use dynamically expanding disks on my Hyper-V setup, but perhaps your issue has to do with the virtual machine swapping memory to disk and thereby expanding the disk?
 
I was aware of dynamically expanding virtual disks was bad for performance. Someone else setup the hyper v and I am just cleaning up the mess.

I will change it to compact disk within the next few days.

Is there anyway i can check for virtual machine swapping memory to disk to confirm it?
