So my Athlon 64 3000+ has been showing up with 50C idle temps so today I decided to reapply some arctic silver 5 again for the 3rd time. So I unlatch the stock HSF and it doesnt seem to want to budge. So I pull on it a little bit and sure enough it pulls free. But then I notice the CPU is NOT in the socket. So I'm like WTF. So I turn over the HSF and there is the CPU, pretty much fused to the HSF. :eek:

At this point I'm freakin out. Two obvious questions are running through my mind. First, why in the hell did the CPU pull out of the socket like that when the latch on the motherboard is STILL latched. Second, why can I not get the CPU off the HSF. It was seriously on there so good it appeared to be welded on. I finanally managed to slide if off of the heatsink. Then I notice just a buttload of arctic silver on the cpu and the HSF itself.

When they say use a bb sized dot, they are not kidding! I didn't know a two bb sized dot would cause the shit to ooze all over the place. At this point I realize that I just pried my precious cpu out of the mobo and probably lost a few pins. After looking over the thing very carefully, I do not see any missing pins, but one is slightly bent. Luckly it is an outer pin and was easy to bend back into place with my fingernail. So I get the thing cleaned off with some rubbing alcohol and back in the mobo, apply a 1 BB SIZED DOT to the cpu, put the hsf back on and plug in all the power cords.

Sure enough, the damn thing does not post! Everything powers on, but I do not get the single beep and no display. So I turn everything off pray to the computer gods, and hit the power switch. yay!! it boots! I will never touch the hsf or cpu for as long as I have this rig again... I just need to accept the fact that I probably have a bad thermal sensor or something and my cpu is running fine.
 
I had the exact same thing happen when using Arctic Silver 5 on an older pentium 1.8 processor. Went to remove the HSF and it yanked the bastid right out of the socket. Bent a few pins but was able to fix it thankfully.

Lesson learned...less is sometimes more...glad it worked out ok...we all learn from our mistakes
 
Since Intel started using heatspreaders on their CPU's I've experienced the same thing. I haven't ever noticed any problems, but the advice to twist first is sound.

Yikes thats pretty scary. Good to know that everyhting turned out okay in the end. I will remember to twist it off if this ever happens to me!
 
I had a similar problem with my 3500+. I unlatched the HSF and i could turn the Mobo upside down and the HSF was stuck to it....

Basically i took my mom's hair dryer and warmed the HSF up uptil it melted the AS 5 and the HSF came lose. I would suggest if you ever do it again, dont do it while your CPU is cold. Thats what i did. Warm your CPU up atleast a little bit(by letting your PC run for a couple minutes) before you go removing the HSF this should keep you from needing to use a hair dryer.

1 bb sized dot? damn i must have had a good 4-5....
 
Same thing happend to me :eek: When I looked down to no CPU being there, I thought a magican had snuck into my house and pulled something on me, lol. I looked at the bottom of the HSF, and there she was. I looked in dismay at my locked CPU bracket. I feel a bit more relieved about the ordeal after seeing so many other people have this issue. I never realised heat spreaders could be so dangerous ;)

Next time you write a thesis, please utilize paragraphs. A good presentation of information prevents me from clicking BACK to find another appealing thread.
