I've got $600 coming in from my taxes, and want to upgrade compy. I haven't followed much of any CPU stuff these past few months. I do a lot of video encoding to x264, so that's where I want most of the upgrade to go. I'd also like to try and get a decent midrange video card upgrade. What do you suggest for movie encoding? Will I need a new motherboard?

A clocked Quad core will benefit you most.
Your current motherboard will be fine, remember to get the latest BIOS if using the latest 45nM chips.
