HP Pavilion problem

Alright, my girlfriend has an HP Pavilion and she downloaded some updates from Windows Update. The computer now refuses to get online.

So far we have tried:
1. uninstalling every windows update
2. uninstalling and reinstalling network card drivers
3. checked all settings for all internet access related protocols under network connections.
4. checked the router's settings.
5. Checking the cables for looseness or being bitten through from her mom's idiot dog that gnaws on everything except itself.
6. Connected it to another port on the router, no change.
And none of this works.

Is there anything that can be done at this point? Am I forgetting something?

The computer in question is an HP Pavilion 746C if that helps any.

As for the router all settings are clear and it should work. She has another computer connected to it and it operates just fine. But this HP refuses to now ever since that Windows Update. From what I can tell the router sees the computer, because the all the normal lights are on. Yet the computer cannot access the router at all. Doing an ipconfig /renew doesn't bring up anything. It times out.

Depending on what version of Windows, it may be time to ghost the machine and reformat/re-install. Anytime I have a borked Windows Update problem, it's usually fixed by doing that.

It's Windows Xp Home edition. Not sure if she was running SP1 or SP2, though when she did uninstall the updates it said there was an SP2 in there for it.

I myself don't have an XP box to know if there's a Service Pack 2 for it so if there is I'm lost and still confused.

The only thing I can think of is that I haven't tried switching cables. But the thing is the router can see the HP. The HP just can't see the router.

Can it connect past the router? Im talking through the cable connection. If it can then there is something up with your router, if not then just use the "rescue" disk..Oh man thats a joke. Those things are a nightmare.

I concur. But they won't be worrying about a rescue disk.

Due to the fact her mother tossed it away.

Yes. I know I'm up the creek without a paddle. Believe me, I'm not liking it either.

I will try the suggestions today or tomorrow and post the results, which hopefully will be the end of things.

That is assuming her mother does not get the bright idea to run the damn thing over to Best Buy.

i used to have the same kind of problem, all the sudden windows wouldnt see a network, had it happen on my hp and my compaq laptop. it only seems to happen in win xp home. instead of reformatting, why not try a system restore? thats what i usually do, just roll back the settings to a few days before her network stopped working. that way she doesnt lose all her data.

Graaah! I suddenly wish I had XP so I would have known about that thing!

I know it's in Win2K too but I never knew it was called System Restore. Under Win2K it's called "Last Good Configuration" or something. Someone smack me.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll try that!

They called up HP direct on me. They had her mother disconnect everything and they went through HP System restore. The guy on the other end told them next time to get their updates through HP only, and not Windows Update at Microsoft. That has left me going W-T-F...but the problem has been solved, thank GAWD.

This wouldn't be such a bad problem if my girlfriend was remotely as computer savvy as I am. Unfortunately she's not, especially when having a bad day. >_< I think I spent more time explaining to her how to reconnect her DSL and her router and the computers than explaining half of what we did. But that's also at the fault that her mother just flung the wires all about and so my girlfriend didn't know what went to what. I set up the network for them.

But thanks anyways guys. Everything you suggested is stuff I would not have thought of. I appreciate it and will keep it in mind for future reference.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention one more thing:

it is apparent HP is pulling a Dell. Because my girlfriend called them and got on the phone with an Indian guy who was rude, obnoxious, and a real jerk toward her. She spent half the time trading insults with him and demanded he either shut the hell up and switch her over to someone who can speak English or put her on the phone with her supervisor to file a complaint.
