So I put 4 320 Gb 10 series HD's in RAID-5 on my Conroe based rig below. I think a power surge caused one of the drives to go flippity on me. This is the P5W-DH Deluxe board running the Intel Matrix Raid controller. I've got Vista 64 running like a dream and XP on the other partition. When I rebooted the computer, I went into the Matrix raid bios, reset the wonky disk to non-raid and let the bios find it again to set it for rebuild...
Went into Vista and I bluescreened. Apparently, I never installed the Raid software in Vista :eek. So...what to do? Asus' crappy, slow website was of little help, I rebooted to XP. Now this is just great! XP boots and my USB controller doesn't fireup and begins doing a disk check on the Vista partition and I see asstons of data errors on the Vista partition and I can't cancel it in time. I let it run.
Ran all night fixing 'orphaned files'. Reboot to Vista...no go. Missing or corrupted registry.
Xp rebooted though, so I installed the Raid software directly from Intel's site, and repeat the remove disk procedure and re-add it to the array. BIOS states the operating system will rebuild the array. Boot to XP and it begins! Hope springs eternal! The rebuild is going at about 8% complete per hour though
Well, I'm keeping my fingers crossed the array will rebuild successfully. If the Vista partition does not automagically repair itself (I can still explore the Vista partition from XP and the file structure appears to be intact, hopefully no data loss from the thrashing it apparently took from the XP Disk check/fix), I am PRAYING that the Vista OS disk repair functions can restore it.
The same thing happened to me a few months ago, but I messed up pulling out the drives and completely scrambled the array beyond repair. This time I did not remove the drives and re-installed everything fresh. Been running well ever since, I believe I tracked down the culprit. I think the housekeeper that comes every couple of weeks to help my mom out accidentally shut the lightswitch that I never use and cut the power to the room resulting in one of the SATA ports to flip its pancake and knock the drive out tof the array. Needless to say, I have now bought a UPS unit.
Well, wish me luck!
