How well does Foobar2000 resample audio?

When I resample my audio from 44.1khz to 88.2khz in Foobar2000, the speed and pitch of the music varies slightly, maybe 2 beats per minute and half a semitone higher. Is this a software problem, or a hardware problem. I know that the Audigy 2 has problems with 44.1khz signals, and it's smart to resample to a frequency that is supported. So my question is this: is Foobar2000 speeding up my music, or is my Audigy 2 slowing down my music when I give it a 44.1khz signal?

I really would prefer to sample it to a multiple of 44.1khz, and 88.2khz seems to be the logical choice.

The whole point of resampling with a AC97 compliant card is to keep windows mixer from doing it.

Are there ways to get past the Windows mixer?

edit: a ratio of 1:2 rather than a ratio of 1:1.0884353741496598639455782312925 just seems to me like it might make fewer sampling errors.

Yea but that is not gonna help much because the native sample rate for the DSP on the Audigy cards is 48K and it will resample it anyhow.

So you're saying that any signal at any sample rate will be resampled to 48khz anyways in the card? What a waste of $50 CDN.

Nope, I never said that. ;)
Multiples of 41.4k get resampled.
Multiples of 48K don't.

Well the Audigy is sold as a gaming card, not an audio mixing card. That's why I got an Emu0404. I figure the craptastic onboard audio will handle games well enough.

I hate to be the one to break it to you but the 0404 still resamples 44.1k streams to 48k.
It just uses a different clocking scheme is all
Why do you think the sample rate is not locked in the default session? ;) :)
It doesn't end there though.......
Notice how none of the hardware effects work when the sample rate is higher then 48k?
Do you know why that is?

I have a 1212, which might be different than an 0404 I guess. Anyway, I don't remember much about the E-Mu patchmix Default Session, but I use two sessions of my own...one with just two strips (ASIO and WAV, with the monitor output being sent to s/pdif) that is locked at 44K, and another session (locked at 96K) that has ASIO only w/ a direct send to the s/pdif out. I use the second one when experimenting with upsampling in Foobar2000 (it sounds about the same to me, but I have an external DAC that is upsampling on its own).

So you can certainly set up an E-Mu card with both ASIO and WAV output such that it will not resample to 48K (unless the Locked indicator in patchmix is wrong).

Yup.... that is one the differences between the 1212M and the 0404 (the 1212M allows you to lock the sample rate 44.1k but the 0404 doesn't. ;)

Wow, that's news to me. I wonder how many people realize that about the 0404? Most people end up getting an 0404 because the sound quality is supposedly not much worse and they don't need all the fancy inputs and outputs that the 1212 supports, but the resampling issue gives people another reason to spend the extra $100 to get the 1212.

The locked 44K WAV + ASIO mode is the one I use most often with my 1212...it lets me listen to music in Foobar using ASIO output while playing long games like World of Warcraft with the sound on (some sounds, not all) or just using Windows programs (with their occasional beeps and buzzes).

The thing with the audigies and the resampling isn't the resampling, it's how badly it's internal resampling works.

EMU 0404 resamples, but it uses an entirely different mecanism from the audigy, it has a dedicated external resampling unit (it's the smallest of the three "big chips") and so loses far less quality than the audigy.

The 1212 cheats (or rather, doesn't), it's still the same dsp, but it uses multiple sample clocks, sidestepping the whole resampling minefield entirely.

Have any links or additional info on this? Not trying to disprove you or anything, just curious and would like to learn more.

On my 0404, the lock is lit up, but I can't turn it off. So it's really not locking, right?

i just got a quick question to clear things up. is foobar supposed to sound better than other media players? im currently using Creative Media source and i find it better than windows media player.

No, I'm just right.

I realize i'm a nub, but please tell me if resampling is done by the Audigy 2ZS in the DAC or just the DPS. If it's done in the DSP, wouldn't kernel streaming bypass any resampling?

Please answer my nub question of whether the Audigy 2ZS resamples even when no DSP effects are applied. Thanks.
