I dont know if this is in the right place, but i want to save all my music(A LOT). So that i can send it online to my other computer. One of my computers is at home the other is at school. How can i compress or send all these files from computer to computer? any help would be great thanks

Why not save yourself a lot of data transfer time and just burn them to a few dvds. Take the easy route..

Take the hard drive with you and transfer them

or

buy an external hard drive.

I'm assuming you have too much music to burn them to DVD, so your options are rather limited.

I agree. I remember when my collection got too big to backup on DVDs.. I actually found a couple of 80GB drives pretty cheep to store my music on.

This would be the best option. Plus I doubt your school would allow such things as they probably would take it as you using some p2p program and downloading illegally (which would probably be against the Acceptable Use Policy).

ok so dvds or external hd are my best bet? no way of doing it on the internet. ?

Of course you can copy them over the internet. There are porbably more tools that could be utilized than there's sand on the beach:

Start a webserver at home, use FTP, BitTorrent it, use Direct Connect, send it via 10 gazillion e-mails, use a VPN and copy it via SMB....

Couple of questions:
How much music do you have, what quality are you willing to lose, how fast is your home's internet connection (upstream), how fast is the away's internet connection (downstream), do you have a limit on monthly transfers at either end, are services at the home or "away" location blocked, do you require encryption, are you afraid of third party access to this music library?

In most cases it would be significantly faster to use an external HDD or DVD's than transferring it over the internet. That does not mean that it is not possible to do it via the internet. It just may not be a good idea, unless you are willing to wait a long time:

Say you have 40GiB of music, your DSL at home is limited to ~128kibit/s - 16kiByte/s.
40*1024*1024/16 = time in seconds to transfer this, assuming zero overhead, no lost packets, no dropped connection, and perfect utilization of the medium:
262144 second
~728.2 hours.

Copying files to external hdd using USB2 (24MB/s):
40*1024/24 = 1706 second ~30 minutes.
Travelling to the "away" location: less than 48 hours provided that you are using an airplane and the "away" location has internet access.
Copying files back to the PC at the away location:
~30 minutes.
Total time using an external HDD: less than 49 hours.

having a backup: priceless :)

Or if your school connection is 10mbit symmetric, and you have 5mbit FIOS at home, for ~600KB/s transfer rates:
40*1048576 / 600 = 69,905 seconds = 19 hours.

So, how much data do you have, which direction are you pushing it, and how fast is the transfer rate that direction? I'd recommend DeltaCopy for win32; that way you can easily update when changes happen. Poke a port in your firewall and go for it.

PS: Your calculation is off by a factor of 10; it should be 728 hours!

I'd get a smiple USB drive and use that. For around $100, you can have a 250 or 300 GB portable drive.
