I have two systems.

SysOffice: sits in the office behind a firewall I don't control
: Holds files I need to sync with sysHome
SysHome: sits at home behind a linksys firewall I control
: Holds files I need to sync with sysOffice

So the question is, how do I keep a folder on each machine sync'd with the other one. There are quite a few files to sync, so an intelligent sync would be good. Even better if it did a file delta or something similar. Basically, the person has alot of photos at home plus quicken and turbotax data. But she's at the office all the time, so would like the option of working on them at the office. Plus, I just built a very nice backup system at the office, whereas at home there is a very poor backup system in place. If her home stuff stays sync'd with the office, then it will be backed up in the same backup sets and thus protected.

What strategy should I put in place to keep the two groups of files at each location sync'd?

Here are some options I've found so far:

Have you considered something like cwRsync? However that won't work well with multi-master replication. You could also look into synctoy.

You could use something like Xdrive which also gives you a free tool to integrate Xdrive seamlessly with your computer, just like an external hard drive with a drive letter in Windows Explorer.

Then all you would need to do is setup a free file sync or backup program to copy them to X drive.

Is it possible for the user to login to the home pc via logmein.com and run apps, or vice versa, so there is only one dataset?

This is the way I do similar things, and I use the free version. I have decent connections both ways so this works pretty good.

That would work, but now her data isn't being backed up in the same backup set as the office. Also, for doing photo work and whatnot, its hard over remote desktop. The photos lag alot from my experience.
