I once had a good monitor, something that was able to run a high resolution but sold it, a friend recently gave me a 15" monitor. When i plug the computer up to it, all i get is lines across the screen. If i start in safe mode it runs fine (at a loewer resolution).

If i clear the CMOS will it revert back to a usable resolution?

Thanks

the problem is that the refresh rate is set too high refresh. Try VGA mode and set refresh rate to whatever the monitor can handle..

Nothing to do with CMOS. Everything to do with Windows. Try removing and readding the monitor in the device manager from safe mode, or lowering the resolution from safe mode. It should be able to do 1024x768 at some setting, maybe more.

you will not be able to in safe mode, it will just come up as default monitor on..
you will have to either get removing the monitor and maybe the video card in safe mdoe than reinstall them to reset the res. Or maybe you can get your hands on another monitor to crank the settings down

in the safe mode menu you choose boot to vga and your done. Its that simple, the set the res to 800x600 and 75 hertz, there was very few if any 15 inchers that did 1024x768 unless its a sony Aperature grill
