Phenom 9850 and NVidia 260GTX, 8GB Ram, Win 7 RC1.

I am currently doing GPU folding but have found the client buggy. Some work it cranks a nice consistent number of points but other it seems to just go in a very small burst, stall for a few, burst and so on. I have the quad CPU so I assume I could crank on that but I had thought that GPU was more efficient so I went that route.

Do you mean that you aren't getting consistant frame times when processing a WU under your GPU client? Are you using the console client, or the Windows based client that resides in the task bar? I use the console version on all of my GPU setups and can't say I've seen anything like you describe (if I interpret you correctly).
 
I'm running both the MPICH and multi-GPU clients on two boxes.
If you're doing other tasks on the computer, you will see slowdowns.

I surf on one of my notebooks running a SMP client and it slows down while I'm on it.

You are correctly interpreting my comments. The time to complete and other "real time" stats are blank, show super high output which dips quickly to zero and then blanks until the next burst of activity.

I am using the Windows client with the graphical display.
 
Ensign.Fodder, what version of the NVIDIA drivers are you using? There's some weirdness with the latest 190.xx drivers.

The computer is a secondary/gaming machine so except when I shut stuff down to play it is basically only folding and running utorrent client.
 
So you're running the system tray client? I've always used that client as well and I've never had trouble with it, though if you have the display up I'd recommend closing it. I'm running a GTX275 on Windows 7 64bit and I've just been using the drivers that Windows Update gave me, output is just the same as it was when I was running Vista. The driver version is 8.15.11.8635 (in the device manager).



 
if you are using the systray version, +1 for closing the display, it doesn't seem to function properly, even though the wu's do.

Not only is the viewer buggy, but it is also inaccurate, and it slows down the performance of F@H while it's open. Ignore it, and use a program like HFM.NET, Fahmon, or Fahspy to monitor your F@H clients instead :).
 
I guess the question is this - 4 cores of CPU <= 1 260 GTX GPU? If you need more detail to decide let me know and I will provide.

Can any of these monitor the GPU client. Fahmon and Fahspy do not seem to be able to do it?

They all can monitor it. You have to point it to the data directory not the program directory.
Default on Win 7 would be C:\Users\USERNAME\App Data\Roaming\Folding@home-gpu
