Hi my old psu blew up and i am considering buying the cooler master eXtreme power 430w psu. I am wandering how can i find out how much wattage my pc needs.

Specs:

P4 3.4 Ghz
1.5 Gb ddr2 533 Mhz
Seagate 120 gb sata hdd
x600 graphics card
2 x teac dvd writers
4 x80 mm fans

ps I am going to replace the x600 with a 7900gt after christmas

I would estimate that you will be using at least 300w with the 7900. Two other psus to look at would be the Thermaltake TR2

and the E-power EP-ZU 450w

I've used the thermaltake in many builds, and have always been happy with it. I've never actually used that E-power, but I've used ones very similar, and they were all very quite and reliable. I've got no idea about the cooler master, but based on the quality of their other product, I'd guess that its a good psu.

Not many people here at the PSU portion of [H] will recommend those units.

However, in their place, I'd recommend:

Ultra X-Finity (black) 500w. The blue for $35 after MIR is OOS. $40 after MIR, free shipping.

Enhance ENP-5150GH 500w. Solid unit, same as the Silverstone Element ST50EF-PLUS. Reviewed here: http://www.jonnyguru.com/review_details.php?id=23
$69 + shipping.

Sunbeamtech NUUO 450w, if modular's your thing. Jonnyguru has a very positive review on the NUUO 550w. $50 + shipping.

Nextherm 460w. Another unit rated highly by Jonnyguru. $60 + shipping.

Just a sampling of possible PSUs. Give us your budget and we can narrow down the search for you. :)

Cheers,
JP

Skip the E-Power (topower built) and the Thermaltake (just avoid it at all costs). Try the XClio 450BL, that's more than enough, and it's cheap as dirt at newegg.

I run a ton of stuff on a 350watt continuous seasonic, those PSUs are really awesome.
