Hi all, i'm kind of a noob when it comes to overclocking.

that being said, i have some questions.

i have an amd athlon xp 2000+ and i've overclocked it to 1.83 (default 1.6). i have the voltage set at 1.875 v on an epox 8rda3i mobo. my temps max out at around 56 celcius.

now, i know that the general rule of thumb is to keep the temps below 50. but i just want to know if my processor will be fine at those higher temps. i've applied as5 to the core and i'm using a thermaltake aeroflow 2 (i think) to cool the cpu. i think the high temps are a result of me not applying the as5 correctly.

also, what is the default voltage for amd athlon 2000+? is 1.875 volts too much?

thanks in advance. if there's anything i'm not taking into consideration, please let me know.
 
thats a lot of voltage for that overclock. you sure you cant lower the voltage? 56degrees C under load is fine, but you might wanna check temps when summer comes around.
 
I'm running my 2600+ overclocked to 2.3GHz at 1.9Ghz. It goes up to 54C under load. I think you are fine on your temps. I don't know the default voltage for a 2000+.

k, i dropped the voltage down to 1.85 and it's stable.

reason i had it up so high is that i've widened the fsb to 166 (from 133). at stock voltage (1.75 i believe) it wouldn't even post. i would increase the voltage .25 increments and stopped when prime95 would run w/ no problems.

i've got it clocked at 1916 ghz (166x11.5) at 1.85 right now, i'm gonna run prime 95 and see what kind of results i get.
 
on the core itself, yeah it's locked. i didn't do anything to unlock it.

however, i'm using an Epox 8rda3i and it allows for multiplier adjustments.
 
1.83 is pretty damn fine for a Palomino. As far as unlocking the CPU goes, the BIOS probably offers you the option to turn them up and down but unless you have unlocked the CPU, changing the multiplier in the BIOS won't actually do anything. I would be comfortable running that CPU at 56C. It's old enough now that even if you do fry it in a year or two (or 5) you will be able to get a replacement that's much faster (or has the potential to be) for under $100 easily.
 
oo excuse my earlier comment about too much voltage because i thought you had a thorough bred since you said default voltage was 1.6. do you have ddr400 ram? if so you should raise the fsb to 200 and adjust the multiplier accordingly.
 
is the core square? if it is then the default voltage is 1.75. i doubt you'll get more than ~1900mhz out of it if that's the case, because that means it is a palomino core athlon. the 2100+ palomino i had topped out at 1995mhz (suicide shot) but i ran it around 1.9ghz for everyday usage. i was trying for 2ghz, but... bad voltages from my motherboard/psu kept it from happening.
