Cost aside, how much is it helping me to run 2 x 512mb instead of 1 x 1gb?
 
Well, logically, twice as much... Normal ram=one channel, this is dual channel, so logically it should go twice as fast, but as i know nothing about ram im sorry i don't know the real answer.
 
depends on your platform. p4 it is necessary, anything athlon, not so much. the architechture doesnt need it that much

edit: i see youre running p4. netburst really craves bandwidth, and dual channel really helps the p4 platform

Pentium 4, its a god send, without it you get slow downs and random short hangs. Once you go dual channel you never go back.
I currently use 2gb (512mb each) in dual channel with a pentium 4 3.06ht 533mhz.
