Well, for starters, you're buying a no-name power supply...that's a big no no. 512MB of memory is already being looked down upon by most gamers, and a 6600GT, although a brand new peice, is somewhat "outdated" performance-wise. It really just depends how long you plan to keep it, and what you expect out of it during that time.
 
well i posted that system on another forum and someone said it will be obselte very soon
 
you'll need more ram and a better video card. like ATW said, if you're going to spend that much money on a system, you should shell out a little more money on the PSU. it's one of the few components that can die and take everything(and i mean everything) down with it.
 
I also say go for a good PSU. I have 5 case fans (4x80mm, 1x120mm all with LED's), a DVD burner, a DVD-ROM, a 6800 Ultra, an Audigy2 ZS Platinum, 2 EIDE hard disks, a floppy (omfg the leetness), and 6 LED's w/ a tempature gauge....all running an Athlon64 system and all my rails are dead on. I wouldn't dare try this on my old PSU....at first I was scared of having that much stuff plugged in, but once I saw my voltages were all fine, I was very happy I got a good PSU way before alot of my other components. Also, go for a gig of ram.
 
Depends on what new games come out next year.

If its a quiet year, expect it to do well. Most new games will probably use the hl2 or D3 engine anyhow so try basing it upon those for now.

Dont hold your breath for more than a year though!
 
that case wouldn't survive very long in my room :) but maybe it's just my taste :) haha

Becoming obsolete is very relative. I was running a pentium III 866 six months ago and I was happy with it, and it was definitely not obsolete, I surfed comfortably, downloaded, burned CDs, schoolwork, excel, photoshop, gaming, everything.

The only computers I consider obsolete are ones that are too slow to run windows xp, broadband, and burn CDs. Those computers are at least 7 years old by now, so the one you're building will last 7+ years before most people consider it obsolete.

By the way, for that processor I would get a 6800GT and 1 gig of ram. Why get a mid range video card for a high range CPU.

6600GT isn't "outdated" it's a mid range card. It's worth it's price and a great buy for the normal computer gamer. But for the CPU you're getting, it just doesn't make sense. If you're gonna save money, than get a nforce2-3 motherboard and an athlon xp 2500+ CPU.

haha don't tell him to get an xp chip.. for the prices of 64 bit cpu's... its so worth it to get one and hes willing to anyways. and the new athlon64 will rape an xp even if u underclock it haha

That's the idea. You're gonna spend 200 dollars on a CPU, than spend 380 for a video card.

But if you're gonna spend 200 on a video card, than get a 70 dollar CPU.

And I wouldn't say getting an xp vs 64 rape. I call spending 600 instead of 300 dollars rape. Besides, that's not the point, the point is if you're willing to spend so much on the CPU, spend the same performance level on the video card, get a 6800GT.

The 64s absolutely annihilate the XPs. P4s even own Athlon XPs.

What's your point? Do you even know what the topic is? Haha.

Figure out what this guy is trying to do, what level of performance is he going for with the money he's willing to spend. Obviously he's looking to spend a lot of money on the CPU so he might as well get a high end video card, you agree? But if he's actually trying to save money, he shouldn't be spending 200 dollars on a cpu when he can spend 70 dollars on a CPU (athlon xp) which he'll be saving 3 times the money but only losing 2 times the performance.

Look it's really simple BizKit123, get a 6800gt if you're gonna get a 64bit chip. If you're not, than don't spend 200 dollars on a processor.

But acknowledging your topic solely, that setup will almost never go obsolete. The general timeframe a high-end computer will be slow compared to the standard speed of computers in the future will be 6-7 years. When it comes to games, 2 years, with a 6800GT, 4+ years.
