How long should it take?

I set up folding on my new computer yesterday, and I was wondering how long it should take to finish a project.. as it seems like its not going fast enough and something is wrong with it.

I have it running 2x, and followed the guide on the hardfolding.com site.

Should it take over a day to finish a project? I don't remember the exact #s, but it seems like its going slower than it should be, maybe idle setting is too low?

Also, if my GF logs onto her account, will it stop folding on mine? Will it stop folding while on the login screen?

Or do some projects take a really long time to complete?

Running @3ghz atm. 4-4-4-12 1T ram.

I have all of the ram allocated and 100% cpu usage, though if I run any program they load w/o any slowdown even though it stays at 100% usage in task manager.

Idle is the correct setting, this will cause it to run anytime the CPU is not doing something else. If you have set the process to run as a service, it will continue running when you are logged out.

In my experience, a day is about right for most projects, but if you post the parts of the log file showing what protein you are working on and your frame times, I'm sure someone will have comparison numbers. If your logfile does not say "SSE boost ok," you can try rerunning the configuration (with the -configonly switch) and tell it to force the use of assembly optimization (under advanced options) and see if frame times improve.

For increased points per day, you could switch to the SMP client, your system is fast enough to complete the work units before the deadline.

some projects do take a long time.
They all take longer if you hover over it and watch it.
If you install the console as a service it will continue to run no matter who or if anyone is logged in.

So will it not run even if I'm logged in, but not the active account (not set as service, just manually run)?

And I did ask it for large projects, didn't realize it could take a few days though.

I'll get some SS later for some more accurate times / values, just wondering if a day or so was too long or average.

crap lol... well I'll check it when I get off work and see if it got anywhere today

Edit: And whats the SMP client?

Edit: And whats the SMP client?

That is the version of FAH that is normally used on multi-processor systems. It can still be used on computers that only have a single processor (or core), as long as the computer is fast enough to complete the work before the deadline.

The SMP client is the one that's multithreaded. You only have to run one to take advantage of 2-4 cores. Plus you get alot more points.

To use the SMP client as a service, you will have to add the user you want to run the service as to the list of users able to log in as a service. This is in "Local Security Policy" from Administrative Tools, in the User Rights Assignment part of Local Policies. Thanks to the person from this forum who posted that, I can't remember who it was.

Thanks for the info!

Psst someone should upate the hardfolding guides to include the SMP client :)
