I'm looking at my sig and it's fairly resepectable for a year and a half old config--with the exception of the video card.

So i'm gonna get a new card...my board is nice, i certaily don't wnna get rid of it until the Athlon fx-55 comes out and socket 939 is mature, along with nForce 4 and PCI express, etc, etc.

The bottom line is that a HOST of new technology is no longer on the horizon--it's already begun taking us on. PCI-E is available and while not more hardcore than high end AGP, it's gonna be defacto by the time i wanna put together my next rig, I'm not sure i can justify spending half a grand on a card that I won't be able to carry with me when I upgrade in 6 months...like in April (q2, 2005).

So what do I do? It's not like you can ebay an AGP card once PCI-E is defacto. Do i pony up and get myself a 9800 for $200 and suffer through Far Cry and all teh new hottness that's come out recently? Or do i just hold onto my money until April?

I would have gotten a new card earlier but my work kept me from devoting time (and therefore funding)

Basically--should I hold out?
 
You might want to do a search. There was a thread about this yesterday. As for you question about AGP, it has a long long time still left. There are too many people with AGP slots. Keep in mind they are still selling PCI cards that are pretty decent....No reason to hold out, by the time you need a new graphic card, your comp would be obsolute...
 
3GHz CPU and a gig of ram paired up with an 8500? You've gotta be fucking kidding me
 
I'm thinking now that I should chill with a 9800 128mb or an x600 card..nothing over $200 until the PCI-E stuff get's serious, and is well supported by mutiple powerful chipsets.

I understand the APG might ba around for atime, but like, when teh FX-55 comes out, i'm fairly sure all teh high end mobo solutions will be sporting PCI-E or worse yet, DUAL PCI-E for SLI or some crazy idea like that.
 
An X600 is PCIe, so you don't want that. A 9800 would be a good buy right now, as it runs all current games nicely and will continue to do so until you upgrade around April.
 
I've kinda got a similar problem..I have enough disposable money to buy a 6800 GT now. However...I have an AT7-MAX2. I'm planning on upgrading the rest of my computer in a month or two to an nForce 4 / A64, but the problem is those mobos are PCIe only. So...my choices are to buy a $400 video card I can use for 2 months, or to buy a $400 video card that I can't use for another 2 months. Both kinda suck.

Unless there are AGP risers for PCIe?
 
But then I get screwed over as far as upgrade options are concerned. (No possibility of SLI vid cards once 6800GTs come down in price)
 
Im betting two years... but this would only be mainstream new cards, im sure all the high end stuff will be pci-e from now on.

Anyways, I would get the 9800 Pro. If you so desire you can XT flash it and overclock :D
Its more or less the "best budget card" out right now, personally I have a 9700np and I can run any game out on medium settings with plentiful FPS ;)

If you have all that disposable money you should buy hte agp now...it's Is disposable money right?

buy an agp....use it, buy a pci-e one, ebay the agp one and be done w/ it...
 
I think AGP as maybe about a year to go. I know that my 6800Ultra is going to be my last AGP card. Even though AGP hasn't yet reached it's full potential, people are going to be making the switch to PCIe pretty soon.
