Just how hot should I keep the memory on my X800 Pro at? Right now, full load is at about 41C. I would like to volt mod it more but don't know how hot it can run.
Actually, I think what he is asking is what is a safe range, ofcourse he wants to keep it as cool as he can. He is just wanting to know how hot before he starts killing the thing.
I had an X800 XT PT overclocked and overvolted as well on both the ram and the core. The core was watercooled so it did not go above 45C full load, but the memory got very hot, I had a temp probe stuck inbetween the fins of the copper ramsinks I had installed, without a fan they were reaching 170F (77C) and I was concerned. However, they did not melt, there were no artifacts, none of that kind of thing. Was it safe for everyday use? Probably not, I ended up frying it with a new OCZ 600 watt power supply anyway (Note to anyone with this supply the BLACK 4pin connector is NOT the auxilary power!) I am doing some insane cooling on my new X850 XT overclocked pretty high from stock, I will also be volt modding it as it was not hard to do on the x800 and it gave me another 50 mhz out of the core/ram. I'll have to send pictures, it will have around 3-5lbs of copper on it!
Memory shouldn't get "hot". A few degrees above ambient is fine.
Cooling will help a little, but keep in mind that exceeding the maximum voltage will kill the chip a lot quicker than keeping it in spec, even if you add heatsinks.
For example, Samsung specs GDDR3 maximum voltage at 2.1v. Exceeding that and massively overclocking is begging for trouble.
I lowered the vdd voltage fro 2.15 down to 2.05 and actually got more overclock out of it. So now, I'm going to experiment with even lower voltages and see what happens.
However, what voltage can the vddq go to? Right now, it's at 2.25. I know it should be .1V over vdd and I'll test with different voltages to see what happens.
