I have a barton 2500+ i got from newegg mid-january, i've only had a non-overclocking MB and crucial pc2700 memory so i haven't had a chance to overclock, but i wanna give it a shot. Getting a new MB (probably shuttle an35 or something used/refurbed if i can't find it) and some new ram, but i dont know which ram to get since i dont know how high i can expect my barton 2500+ to go, and i can't afford to get the greatest stuff since im on a limited budget. (spending money just to O/C!) This also means i'll be limited to mid range air cooling, no water, evaporative, or bleeding ear fan/sink combos (although they all sound like fun i just dont have the money right now =D)

Right now I'm looking at single 512mb sticks.
Mushkin 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 CAS 2.5

Crucial 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 8T CAS 3

these are pc3200, what are the chances that i would want something higher? like pc3500, pc3700, or pc4000?

well, for my experience with my amd 2500 barton. Im using a MSI K7N2 delta L motherboard with a nforce2 chipset. Now as far as i was told, the nforce2 chipset is very helpfull with overclocking. Im also using a higher quality ram OCZ Platinum Performance 2-3-2-5 1T are the timings. Right now it sells for about 120$ for one 512 stick. But if your only doing this for o'cing it. Get the dual channel pack for 126$ (2x256). Now im not sure what would have happend if i would have bought just value select ram or a good brand of ram which i have. But id say along with ur ram and motherboard, the most important thing will be your cooling. Im using a Tt Silent boost heatsink and a Tt Smart case fan 2 and i get fairly good temps. I am also going to be getting another stick of my ram to help out my o'c alittle becuase right now i have it o'ced to 2.1ghz. But i like to play it safe. Im going to go for 2.2ghz if temps aprove.

important factors

1. Motherboard
2. Chipset
3. Ram
4. Cooling
5. Cooling

Please correct me anyone if im wrong about what i say. and GL to you. :D

right, so you haven't had to go higher than 200fsb. I think i should have asked more specifically, sorry, but what are the chances that I could/would want to go higher than 200fsb? If my chances of wanting to go much higher than 200fsb are slim, I'm assuming the ram i linked to would be adequate, or am i wrong? thanks for the response though sportyguy, I'm thinking of something along the lines of the silent boost for cooling too..

higher than 200fsb on air, im betting that wont happen but you may live in a freezer. The temperature of ur room is also very helpfull with cooling. Dont get the silent boost. get the volcano 12. Its a better fan/hs combo. The most imporntant thing is to test test test the cpu when you o'c it. Use sisandra burn in wizard to test it. Safe temps are anything below 60c. But me, i like to say under 55 to be safe. and even them imkinda worried. Test your equipment, dont make assumptions, thats where things go bad. Its not going to be a fast easy process but if you want it to be right, u get what u put into it. GL

thats giving you 2200+mhz. You might want to push it max to 2400 so that would give you a 218FSB. This of course goes along with alot of other parameters being ideal or by pure luck of pulling a sweet core.

I linked this article about crucial overclocking in another post:

pc3200@220fsb

hrm... so if i wanted to go over 200fsb, i should go crucial

there is a chance i will go over 200fsb, however slim..

ahh, so mushkin or crucial? mushkin has lower timings so in the most likely event that i stay at/under 200 fsb it's better. corsair is known to go over 200 fsb so in the small chance (and O/C is largely on taking chances..) i can go over 200 fsb, it simply could...

what are the chances that i can run the crucial at CAS 2.5 (overvolting??) and what are the chances i can run the mushkin faster (perhaps on relaxed timings and overvolting?)

thanks for the input! i like the article you linked mister rogers.. and i'll look into the volcano12

i dont really think it matters which brand you get, becuase its value ram. Which name you think will last longer. I would go with crucial. the amd 2500 will ez overclock to 2.2ghz but you need to test it and make sure ur equipment wil alow it. also download motherboard monitor to monitor ur temps. make sure u put the correct motherboard, so the temps will be correct.

point taken

so in conclusion
CAS 2.5 isn't great enough to make Mushkin > Crucial

so I'll get the crucial, if i get the chance to go over 200fsb than i know my ram will handle it for sure..
