How far could I overclock this?

AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2600+
Abit NF7-S
OCZ Performance Series PC3200.2 sticks of 256MB
Extreme Volcano 12
Arctic Silver 5
Thermaltake Silentpower 420W
Hardcano 9
5 Case Fans...

Oh and thats the setup I might buy(from newegg), so any suggestiions for changes are welcome.

1 ) thermaltake heatsinks, for the most part, suck.
2 ) OCZ is the worst brand of RAM.. EVAR. I'd rather get generic.
3 ) thermaltake does not make good power supplies, get an Antec or Enermax.

otherwise, you're looking good. I might buy the 2500+ instead of the 2600+, as they should be quite similar.

With a setup like that, ( assuming you make the changes I noted ), you should probably get around 2.5GHz to 2.7GHz. No overclock is guaranteed though.

Ok then, some questions...

Which heatsink should I get?
Which RAM should I get?
Oh and the PSU comes with the Thermaltake Lanfire II(as does the hardcano 9 and 4 case fans), so there's not much I can do there...I think...
Oh and I'd prefer the processor I am getting because it's a Mobile. I heard they overclock better and use less voltage...

Anything in Thermalright's line is nice, and the Zalman's have also come on strong.

I'd ditch that fugly thermaltake case, and get something nice. The Antec, chieftec, and Lian-Li cases are great. Thermaltake doesn't make anything good IMHO. All show and no go.

To OC an athlon you need a PSU with a strong 5v rail. The Antecs are good for this.

I'd stay with that CPU. Mine does 2200 at stock vcore, and you can see in my sig what I have it running at now.

my opinions

RAM: anything Kingston.......HyperX would be optimal
HSF: anything Zalman
CASE/PSU: kill 2 birds with one stone and get the antec sonata which comes with a very nice 380W silent truepower PSU

as for the CPU......go with the mobile 2400+..........a lot of great things can happen with this processor........plus it's cheaper

P.S. Ditch anything TT

Time for my opinion if it matters

AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2600+
Abit NF7-S OR DFI Infinity
Kingston HyperX Dual Kit 512MB(256MBx2) DDR PC-3500
Thermal Right SP-97 w/ Panaflo H1A (I think that's the right model number)
Artic Silver 5
Antec Sonata w/ 380W PSU
Buncha Panaflo/Papst Case Fans

I'd go with a DFI Infinity Ultra 400 motherboard. Same price, but on average they hit 250FSB with out mods.

I own a ThermalTake Xaser edition 480w and I have absolutely no problem with it. And its nice , quiet and at good price.

The total is about $990. I'd rather keep the NF7-S, because it comes with onboard soundstorm, which would be better than the Sound Blaster Live! that I would have gotten if it didn't. The reason the vid card isn't too great is because, well, graphics aren't that important. I mainly just want to see them good...you know, being able to see the hair on their arms isn't really important to me. lol. Besides, the video card has a gigantic fan, great for overclocking. :)

Sound storm isn't that great, the AC 97' 6 Channel audio is just as good I think. But everyone to there own. The infinity is a better overclocking board because it has more available voltage options:
  • Cpu up to 2v
  • Vdimm up to 3.3V
  • N/B Voltage up to 1.9V
  • AGP Voltage up to 1.8V

To me I'd rather have the overclocking abilities than the sound setup. Also the north and south bridge have Heatsinks on them to help cool the system.

uh... the infinity has soundstorm. Definitely uses the MCP-T southbridge and should fill all the requirements for that specification. The SPDIF out is different than the NF7-S, pretty sure it still qualifies for "SoundStorm". Your speakers will work with your Infinity exactly as they would with the NF7S. Just surprised evil didnt mention that as he seems to know alot about the board. Infinity is a better choice. Not trying to beat a dead horse just point out the sound bit. Ive had both and like the infinity a bit better unless you need more than 2vcore. The boards dont take to cpu vmods too well. Hence the low ceiling. The 3.3v ram is a great thing to have as I dont mind 3 to 3.1v day to day in my BH5. Whereas more than 2vcore tends to give me benching MHz on my cpu - not much more. Winbond chips for example seem to scale with every +.1v for example so it's nice to have the option.

If this is a gaming rig, you might want to take a chance on 2*512 KHX3000 at not much more $$$ than 2*256 KHX3200 or better. They'll do 200+, mine can do 230@3v and keep scaling. On a gaming rig it is near essential to have a gig these days. Farcry, Ut2004, BFV all essential.

Through the grapevine it seems new batch NF7S are not so hot and that would be my most compelling reason to get teh infinity instead. Simple heresay you might say, but I certainly believe it as the AN7 I tried was very bleh.

It's been a while since I've had one, and I couldn't recall exactly if it did or not. I pulled the sound info from the site and I swore to myself the MCP-T was the soundstorm chipset, and I just built a Infinity for a guy but couldn't remember exactly what sound chipset it had. Didn't wanna mislead him. His board did 260FSB @ 1.7v 2.5 4 4 7 mem timmings on my Geil platinum 4000 @ 3.2V

I like thermaltakes heatsinks. Not because they perform better than anyone elses, but because almost all their products look awesome.

And they dont perform bad at all. I do like kingwin though.

For memory i like geil.

well, what ever u do decide
remember that the NF7-S isnt compatible with the Zalman CNPS 7000A-AlCu (unless u cut the HSF)
the Infinity can be coupled with the Zalman so thats what i would get :D

I might as well get a refurb mobo, right? I mean, I am getting all the cables anyways. What cables would I need that I a not getting separately if I buy a refurbished mobo?

I wouldn't get a referb mobo or video card from Newegg. Referbs are typically something someone sent back. It could be OCer buying something that didn't OC to their expectations, and RMAing it for another one.

Ok, I'll stick wit the retail, but the vid card isn't a refurb, but rather a bulk one..

I have a lot of TT products and I am steering clear from them in the future. They may look nifty, but that's about it.
