How does a laptop PS2 splitter cable work??

I have seen quite a few of these splittle cable which enables you to hook up a PS2 keyboard and a PS2 mouse into a laptop's ps2 plug. Item looks like this...

I'm kinda curious...how does it work? My guess is that keyboard is probably using half of the pins for communication while the mouse uses the other half of it...but I'm not sure....

Can someone let me know how it works?
