How do I lap a cpu waterblock?

I was wondering if someone could help me out on how to lap a cpu waterblock. I am not getting the temps in my water cooling setup that I think i should be. Its a D-tek Fuzion by the way. The temps on the cores of my q6600 vary by as much as 5-6 C sometimes idle. When I stress test, the difference is up to 10C difference on some of the cores. If you don't mind, I need detailed instructions as I have never lapped a cpu or a water block before. Thank you
 
i believe as you would lap any other heat sink, do like 600 grit, 1000 grit ect...
 
What does it mean if I run 4 instances of prime95 on my q6600 and 2 of the cores are 10 degrees C higher than the other 2. Right now i'm benching my q6600 at 3.6ghz @1.5v. Core temp displays the core temps as follows: 65 56 56 65. Are those temps too high or are they ok? should all the cores temps be the same or closer than mine are under load? with that big of a difference, is my cpu water block not very flat? That's the only thing I can think of at the moment. I don't know if I have the confidence to lap my D-tek Fuzion so is there another block that is better?

What are the max safe temps for a quad core?
 
I would suspect that the waterblock is cooling more on one side than the other or cooling in the center only,could be lack of thermal paste or too much....Try putting up CoreTemp or somthing that shows all 4cores idling and slowly back off one waterblock screw or tighten and see if the temps even out ...Also if you dont use a $hit load of thermal grease that helps too... I alway apply the grease paper thin on a lapped surface...Smooth surface=very thin layer of AS5 or MX1-2...for DualCore or QuadCore...i cover the whole IHS...The Newer chips tend to heat the Whole IHS verse just the center...due to being Soldered on!;)

Also if the D -tek is slightly bowed its probally cooling the 2cores in the center better than the outside cores.........[ ] [ ]........red=ouside core,blue=inside core.....hope that explains it a lil for ya...

NOTE:If you are going to lap that Waterblock make shure you lap the CPU....Ive found that both work better when both are lapped not just the waterblock...also if your waterblock was bowed id only use on a non lapped IHS...

P.s. When lapping sand with 600 wet/dry using very lilttle water and then 1000grit and then 1200 or 2000 for final finish...I will sand in one direction untill even then turn the waterblock/heatsink 90degrees and sand till the first marks are gone, Then repeat for 1000 ,1200, and or 2000grit using same method...this will work every time and please take your time and make shure you are lighly sanding with the waterblock staying flat! You do not want to rush lapping as you will recieve better results when care is taken:D
 
i don't think i would have the confidence to lap that expensive q6600 since i've never done one before. I'd maybe do it if was able to practice on an older crappy cpu or something. Anyways, i took my waterblock off and tried putting less AS5 and I put the block back on and cranked in on as tight as the spring limiters would let me, i've never put it on that tight before and its seems to have help with temps. My idle has went down about about 3 C and the cores are all within 2-3C whihc is a little better than before.
 
It could also mean that the temperature sensors on the cores are at their extremes of fluctuation. Generally the on die thermistors have an error range of +/- 5C, which is why I have always shunned real world testing. The implement of measuring is quite simply horribly inaccurate. You might as well stick your finger on the side of the waterblock and say "it feels cool".
 
Im in the same situation, pondering the purchase of a back plate. I've read it helps out with the pressure distribution over the CPU IHS when tightening the screws supplied w/ the d-tek block. I also considered lapping the d-tek and my q6600 but never got the guts to. Letme know how everything goes. Today i re-applied AS5 and tightened the screws as tight as i could get them however my temps didnt lower much and there still is the massive gap inbetween the cores. Prime 95 gap is 8-10 degrees. Im ordering a back plate tomrrow, I will report back eraly next week.

Don't lap a D-Tek or Swiftech waterblock as they're all convex at this point. You'll only be hurting yourself as everyone is looking to bow their blocks more and more these days.

With bowed blocks, you'll have to understand that there are greater variances between mounts. I normally remount 2-3 times with unbowed blocks to get a baseline. With bowed blocks, this increases to 5 times.
Lapping your CPU would help but I too refuse to lap something that's under warranty.
