how do i apply thermal grease?

athlon 64 3000 onto retail hsf. messed up on instalation and had to remove the cpu and of course the thermal tape that came with it. http://silmore.ebigchina.com/sdp/165470/4/pd-1008124/330449-505364.html this is the only stuff i couldf find at the store. was $2. i want to instal windows and get rid of all thies boxs and clean up this weekend, and order a new hsf and thermal greas and install it when it gets here (prolly wendsday or thursday) so ill just be using this crap for about 2 days, instaling windows and possibly drivers. then i will most defenatly take this shit off and get some good stuff for games
so how do i put this stuff on? also what hsf and thermal grease do you recomend i get?

Order AS5 (Artic Silver 5)
You WILL need some Alcohol 99% is best but no less than 95% to take off the old stuff.

Remember try not to touch the bottom of the heatsink, your hands even if clean= grease/oil.

For a Socket 939 board and a64 I recommend either a Thermalright XP-120 or Xp-90 if 120 will not fit (Its F huge).

All you do is make sure CPU is clean as well as HSF(Heatsink), and you can either put a THIN layer ontop the whole CPU (Metal covering only, the part that will touch the HSF), OR you can put a small dab in the middle of the cpu(the size of a piece of rice and 1/2).

In both cases make sure the HSF/CPU is clean and you can use a creditcard to spread the Thermalgrease, or some people even use razors to get it very thin.

I've hard good things about arctic silver. I wasn't sure that the stuff on the bottom of the stock hsf would work,so I applied the paste on top of it(mistake #1 I guess) and i'm not sure,but using the plastic bag method didn't work too well for me. The paste wasn't easily spread and turned out rather rough. I hope the hsf's pressure smoothed it out. That's been my experience so far though, so try not to repeat it

It won't cook the proc if you use 70% or rub your fingers over the bottom of the sink. Just get the messed up tape off of it, squirt on a glob of grease, spread it around a bit, and install the heatsink. Not doing it right will raise your temps a couple degrees, but won't cook your proc. The slightly higher temps will just cost you a few MHz of OCing, which is why overclockers worry about it so much.
