How do CF/SLI work with games?

Dumb question, I just want a quick answer to understand.

In order for the game to utilize both my video cards, the game needs to support CF/SLI, but do the drivers have to be updated? As in, a new game comes out that supports CF/SLI, but there are no new drivers updated, would I still see improvement over single card in the game with two cards? And then the updated drivers would push the cards to scale better in that specific game?
