After making it through a windows install and half an hour of web surfinf my computer shut off with the blue screen of death that usually means overheating. I turned it back on a couple of times and the same thing would happen.

Now at this point, it doens't even post.

So low and Behold when I open the case and take the heatsink off the cpu is burnt into the bottom of it, and wasn't even secured into the socket (It was secured into the motherboard, it was the plastic that holds the silver lever down for the actaul socket that is broken). The CPU is so burnt into the heatsink that I can't even pry it off with a flat head screw driver (Its burnt out anyway) and the artic silver seemed to be running for its life from the edges.

So my main question is, what caused this? was it the lever from the socket (AM2) that was broken and maybe when the case was moved it de-loged the CPU a bit maybe causing it to burn out? I can't think of any other explanation because obviously my motherboard is built with fail-safe automatic heat shutdown mechanism.

Also, now that i've removed the burnt CPU, is my motherboard safe to just buy another one and be good? The broken socket lever (the lock) bothers me, and i'm still not really sure if the board itself hasn't been shorted. It still does turn on, obviously doesn't post without a cpu, and the red light goes on right once its plugged into the wall.

I'd Aprreciate all the input i can get
The system were talking about is:
ABIT KN9 ULTRA
A64 3200 AM2
Geforce 73000
2gb corsair

Do you know what the error message was on the BSOD?
