Ok i kno these things are said to run really hot but this kinda takes the biscuit. Fair play im runnin pretty pooey cooling but its a bit silly. At stock speed and stock volts. My 146 is idling at 38C with a thermaltake bigwater kit. (insert flaming here) Iv literally just installed it so i kno it can take time to bed in and stuff. But thats plain ridiculous. I used to get 28c idles on my 3200+. Apart from getting a new kit or whatever else productive anyone has to say. Is there any way to improve these temps?
 
Try reseating the thermal grease? Also if you do this make sure to just put a dot in the middle of the IHS and let the weight of the HSF spread it. Don't spread it yourself.
Remember - more is less

You can also try lapping the heatsink. I recommend www.easypckits.com for a very effective lapping kit, and excellent service.
 
Both CPU and Block were clean during install. Done the rice size dot in center of core and let it sort itself out already. Only been running bout 20 mins
 
Yeah i kno its crap. Thought it would be better than my Freezer64 tho. Load temp are a little better. like 2c but thats still 51c loaded at stock on water!
 
38 is kinda high but how is the PC case air flow?

Make sure everything is nice and tight and in place.

I have a SI 120 and was getting 34-35 idle and paid no mind. On high it would go to 47-48. I din't think it was so bad but I opened the case and realized the heatsink was not properly set one 1 connector!!! It's now 30 idle and 36-38 on full load!!!

I also have the OPty 146. I love my SI... was thinking of putting my Zman 7700 back in but I don't think so. :)
 
As far as air flow goes. Iv got a 80mm fan on the side intake. a 120mm on the front intake. 2 in my PSU and a 120 on my rad blowin out of the case

In everest ultimate edition in DMI and Processors. Its saying i have 2 processors. 1 of which is disabled by user. Could this be a dual core processor with a broken core thats been relabled?
 
Your load temp is you need to be concerned about.
In my last WC setup my idle temp went up 3C, but my load temp was only 1C above that. With the air the load temp differential was about 11C. It was also about twice as loud.

What is the processor code on the chip? Did you write it down?
 
Did you reformat when you installed the new chip? I think everest is seeing the old chip (it'll likely still have a reg entry) and is saying that it's disabled. I've heard nothing of amd selling disabled core cpus.

there are single core chips that are just dual core toledos with disabled cache and a disabled core.
 
i'd try a quick reseat...just to be safe, and make sure you didn't use to mauch termal paste.
 
You have to remember the Opty uses more amps, so it will run hotter then your 3200 :D I have a 3200 Vinnie a 146 Opty and a 148 opty that im running now and my 3200 ran cool, but with more amps comes more heat.

umm... no....

the Opteron does not use more amperage just for the sake of it being an Opteron. They are both 90nm K8 cores... one just has 1MB cache and one has 512kb cache... power consumption is not going to be THAT different. Also, you cannot say more amperage= more heat... a processor taht consumes 5a at 3v is consuming the same power as processor consuming 10a at 1.5v, 15w. the higher amperage will put more strain on the PWM circuit, but that has nothing to do with processor TDP.

an athlon64 and opteron at the same voltage and clockspeed will consume virtually IDENTICAL amounts of power.

Um sorry i meant watts not amps :D and yes the opties do use more watts, so what i have seen in mine is more heat, my 3200 ran 28c on air my 146 when up to 32c and my 148 was around 35c so if its not more heat put out by watts, then what made such a big jump in temps ? thats all with stock volts now if you up volts to them i know that will make them run hotter but on stock volts i seen a big jump from one to the other.
And its a fact that the opties are running hotter from what i have read so why would they jump so much ? if its not the wattage. Maybe im wrong here i don't know, just stateing what i have seen with mine.

clockspeed and cache, exactly like i said. also, not all processors are created equal and some batches just plain run hotter than others (they are probably drawing more current, which is amperage). not to mention the variable contact the core has with the heatspreader, that can hinder heat transfer as well.

a 146, bare core, should run at exactly the same temperature as the 3200, cahce wont make that big of a difference.

and of course its wattage if the CPU is actually consuming more power... watts is a measurement of power, and is found by multiplying amperage by voltage.
 
The actual transistors in the CPU can be faster (hotter) or slower (cooler) regardless of clockspeed.

i am fully aware of this. AMD is not creating a whole different set of cores for the 1xx opterons and the athlon 64's, the dies are identical, with the exception, i guess, of those parts taht are actually 512kb native parts.
 
I Figured the IHS has something to do with it, I have seen alot of people take them off on these 148's , I just thought the wattage made a difference in temps between the 146 and 148's

it does. 148 is 200mhz faster than the 146.... but there should be very, very little difference between the 3200 and 146.
 
Just to jump in and clear up the power argument between 3200 and 146. according to amd they are both 90nm k8 67W cores. Only diff is one is 1mb cache. Everest reads my optie as 89W which i why i wonderd about disabled DC.
