Im running an XPS 420 system with a Q6600 at 2.4ghz(stock), 4gb DDR3 ram(1x4), and a nVidia 9800GT.

The problem Im having is that my 9800GT is running at about 60 idle, and 81 degrees Celcius under load. Im not sure WHY its running so hot because my cpu is running at good temperatures with a stock dell cooler (32 idle, 50 under load). My hard drives are also running cool, normally at about 28 degrees. I don't have any artifacting so there doesnt seem to be a big problem, but the heat is concerning me.

I have updated the drivers recently(a week ago) so Im not sure what the problem is. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
 
That's pretty normal for those cards from my experience. My 8800GTs always ran around those temps.
 
Video cards run much hotter then other components, there built for it.

Your temps are just fine.
 
Really? Man, I hear people running their stuff at 32 idle and 50-60 load and I figure those are in normal ranges. My 9800GT isn't even OCed, or any part of my system for that matter, so it just cause a source of concern for me. Anyone else experience these temperatures?
 
Those temperatures are quite standard... almost low compared to what some cards can run at. I had a 9800GX2 that would idle at 80C and load at 110C

I'm pretty sure it's programmed not to try to get lower than 60°C (i.e. turns the fan down once it gets that cool). This is in a Cooler Master RC-690 with half a dozen 120mm Yate Loons. I'm not surprised that your Dell case would be a little bit warmer.

A lot of search results show that Nvidia recommends keeping the 9800GT below 105°C, so 81°C is still plenty cool.
 
i was just as surprised and disappointed to learn the specs as you are right now. so i refused delivery of the 9800GT and got an ati 4770 instead. 44C idle and 78C load.

energy efficiency & heat is a big deal for me :)

The temperature the chip is running at implies *nothing* about the heat it produces or the energy it uses. A card running 60C under load could very easily be producing much much more heat and using more energy than one running at 80C under load. Temperature is not heat.
 
Yeah, 80c isn't really anything to be concerned about on a GPU. Over 90, then you're running a bit hot. For instance, one of my old 8800GT's can peak at over 100c under load. That is too hot

That is an absolutely awful idea. You'll be stuck with a giant turd that farts fireballs (very hot, very stuttery, and very crappy at this point). Let us know your budget and we'll help you pick out the absolute best card for your money

9800GX2 didn't run crysis all that well for me. That was seriously the biggest waste of $600 I have ever spent. I'll NEVER buy another dual gpu nvidia card.

nah thats not true.. the minimum fan speed setting for the 8 and 9 series is 30%.. and usually stays at 30% at all times unless you hit the thermal limit then it will switch to 100%.. the temps look perfectly normal for that card.. if your really worried about it you can manually turn up the fan speed to about 50% should drop the temps about 10C but will add a ton of noise..
 
Ah...Thanks a lot for the input. I was just really worried haha. My cpu is at 32 while my gpu was at 81. haha.
 
The stock cooler for 8800gt/9800gt are pretty bad at cooling, same with the 4850. Limitations of the single slot cooling... I'd say those temps are expected if you're using the standard heatsink. Which is why I went with one preinstalled with a zalman cooler :D
 
thats about average for that PC....ive got one sitting beside me(not mine....clients im fixing....), with same setup minus DDR3.....the card is ~50-60 idle, ~70-80 load, based on ambient......the computer has 2 frikin fans is the issue(one 120...and that then blows hot air off the CPU cooler.....needless to say, the card gets very little cool air.......

however, your CPU temp is right on where this one is(the 420 beside me)
 
Not trying to hi-jack here, but I am running 9800gts sli, my 1st card is usually around the 50c and second is like 60c+, load ill be like 80c for 1st and 90-95c for the second
