Hosting VM data on virtual machine, same ESXi host?

Hi!
I'm about to get started with my first slightly more serious home virtualization project, and wanted to check that I'm not about to do something stupid...

My plan has been this: I will have one ESXi host, on which I will among other things run a guest file server with passthrough to a disk array. This will either expose file shares, or if I figure it out, an iSCSI target. Can I/should I use this iSCSI target as a store for other hosted virtual machines? I realize I can't have that guest hosted "in itself", but for the others?

This is not something that will be hosting an enterprise solution, but I'd like to avoid doing something which won't work, or will break easily.
 
Not and ideal approach, but many people setup their home labs in this way. Even some enterprise storage solutions leverage this underlying idea.
 
Thanks! Care to elaborate? Are there any ways to make it "less bad"?
 
Why the complexity? If you have supported local disks just host the VMs on the local disk datastore. Why run a VM, provide an iSCSI target through it, which then utilizes the same local disks.
