Hose Quick COnnects kill flow?

I've been using them for some time now. They will restrict flow some, but not enough to hurt your overall temps if you have a good pump. I have 4 sets on my one system and the temps stayed the same with or without them installed.

I used the Colder HFC-12 series on that setup................ :cool:

You can go one size larger to minimize the restriction. I looked at the colder quick disconnect data sheets and basically came to the conclusion to go one size larger if you want to keep the same amount of flow. If your using 1/2" ID tubing, then use 5/8" quick disconnects and for 3/8" ID tubing, use 1/2" quick disconnects. Just make sure you use some more flexible tubing such as clearflex or tygon. I used a hairdryer to soften it up further before slipping them on. I doubt vinyl will be flexible enough to stretch over those larger barbs.

I thought that both the 5/8 and 1/2 had 3/8 nominal flow because they share the same internal components. I could be wrong, though.

If this is the case, then going with a larger barb won't make much of a difference, if at all.

This topic of quick disconnects (QD) always make me roll over. ;) I find it amusing that you guys will bitch and complain about using a 3/8" block in your "high flow" systems, but then turn around and stick in an ultra restrictive device like colder QD's in it. As I have tried to point out previously it is readily apparent that your high flowing systems have reallly excess flow capacity that isn't doing anything.

That should be evident to all after reading Bio-Hazard's statement of "They will restrict flow some, but not enough to hurt your overall temps if you have a good pump. I have 4 sets on my one system and the temps stayed the same with or without them installed."

assuming of course that is the application
I was researching the restriction issue in combination with other restrictions for a whole rackmount worth of devices and a central chiller.

But it still boils down to the same point, matching total resistance to head

Do we *have* to get into this argument again? You can't get everyone to buy aqua computer. (OT: Even if they do perform the same, they're too flippin expensive for me)

I wouldn't think that a set of colder quick disconnects to be "ultra restrictive". I haven't seen any testing to confirm anything, though.

Someone with 7/16'' or 1/2'' tubing should really do an experiment both with and without QD's and find the difference in their temperatures and flow.
 
Excuse me but I happen to have a set of Colder Quick Disconnects sitting about 24 inches from me right now with water going through them 24 hours a day. I know about Colder products having used them personally as well as professionally in two different professions (engineering and nursing). They work great in lower flowing applications like water cooling and hemodialysis.

If you take apart a Colder disconnect it should be obvious how restrictive they are. You can also go digging around on the Colder site and you should be able to find all the engineering data you want. Bio-Hazard did some amateur testing and I quoted his results in regards to temperature above. Unless they have some type of flow meter they won't be able to test a closed loop.
 
Not all of us High flow/large bore users are anti lowflow/small bore!!!! I really wish this debate could die.. or stay confined to one thread.

As for the Topic.. I love Colder QD's, they seem to hold up to repeated use very well.
 
I think I've seen those used before in fungicide/insecticide lines. The stuff we were pumping is a much thicker liquid than anything you're going to see in a water-cooling loop. Never had any problems with the quick-connect, the pump was a different story though, had to clean it twice a day to keep it working.

I admit that I could very well be wrong, and I have no problem with that. You could be a bit more pleasant in your posts and not get all angsty and emotional, though. I'm not on a high-flow fan-boy/AC hater out to provoke you. I just want to get some reliable flow and temperature difference information so I can find the penalty for using quick disconnects.

Anyway, I took a look at the drawings of what they look like inside, and they do look rather restrictive. Simply looking at drawings, however, don't give the sufficient technical data in terms of head/pressure loss that we need to figure out exactly how restrictive these QD's are.

I'm trying to find some hard evidence to how much pressure loss there is for these disconnects at ~1-2 gpm flowrate, but I haven't had much luck. Colder supplies a flow performance curve here but the lowest graphed value is at about 4.5 gpm, which is outside the flowrate of most high flow systems. I've googled around but haven't had much luck finding any other hard data.

I'd hesitate to predict because the data given isn't accurate enough to do so. In waterblock reviews a pressure drop of as low as .1-.2 is important. You simply can't get accurate results through prediction or guessing.

Just for reference, the pressure drop for the D-tek WW is .49 PSI at 1gpm. For the Swiftech storm, it is 2.74. I would assume that the pressure drop would either be between these values, and hopefully less than the former.

Does anyone have some good information to share regarding the colder quick disconnects?

If you want better information than what is available at the Colder site I would suggest you just e-mail and ask them. If you look at the Colder computer cooling brochure you will see the back end of a Koolance EXOS, which is how they got started into this line of products aimed at us.

I rarely get angsty and emotional over computers, and it seems here that just because I'm a gal with an opinion I get accused of being emotional and bitchy for expressing my own view?
