Horizontal Screen Problem - Doom3

Hi, I have a problem with doom3 that's ruining my experience of the game. When I play (any quality / resolution), I get a problem that looks like a horizontal shear line - like the top 1/3 of the screen isn't in line with the bottom 2/3 whenever I look around the 3d space. It's as though the graphics are being rendered in the wrong place.

Kindof hard to explain. The fps are a fairly steady 60fps on all but ultra settings.

I used to have the same problem with an old graphics card, when it was overheating. Thing is the card is about 53/54oC idle and goes up to about 60oC under load (RivaTuner).

I just built this system so perhaps I'm missing something. Also I'm new to windows (from mac / unix) so I'm not too familiar with the internal workings. This is on a fresh install of xp (no service pack), followed by installation of sp2, antivirus (avast), then driver install. For the graphics card, I installed straight from nvidea v66.93, I didn't install gigabyte drivers (should I have?). Also, I'm running an image I made of the dvd (blindwrite) with daemon tools (my dvdrom is VERY noisy) - could this have a effect?

The system specs are in my sig. all speeds are stock (for now) - gpu is 500mhz, memory is 1000mhz, cpu is 2ghz at about 35-40oC. mb temp is about 37-42oC.

Is there any chance I got a bad graphics card or something similar? The monitor is a hercules lcd screen, 1024x768 max (could this be the problem?).

Thanks,

G.

is it only when you look around the room? if so, i think its what i think is called "tearing" where the refresh rate isnt the same as the FPS and when you look around certain frames need time to catch up, and it looks as though the picture is "tearing" in half, or any size.
not too sure about that, though, hopefully more opinions arrive. and i dont think the monitor resolution itself is the problem, as mine is the same max resolution and things seem to be fine.

Looks like that could be it - I'll post back with results.

Thanks!

G.
