I am looking to build a machine for an ESX/Citrix environment. I want to use ESX as my hyper-visor and it will be used to create my Citrix environment.

I will have the following running:

• 
  Server 2012 for AD/DHCP/DNS.
  2k8R2 (2X) for XA 6.5
  2k8R2 or 2k12 for SQL
  2x 2k8R2 for WI servers
  2XServer 2012 for SF servers
  2XServer 2012 for DDCs
  2XServer 2012 PVS servers
  NetScaler VPX

And finally I will be using PVS to do pooled desktops/XA session hosts.

I was looking at some Dell R710s on eBay (dual CPU with at least 72GB of RAM). Are there any other servers that are not rack mountable (to prevent noise) that are available on eBay for a similar price (~1000)?

I've got a pair of AMD Opteron 6320 CPUs, heatsink, and Supermicro H8SGL-F motherboards I'm selling. Boards support up to 64GB of desktop DDR3 or 256GB of ECC memory. It fits just fine into a regular ATX case. Also have WD RE4 SATA drives for sale.

i'd recommend to contact xbyte and server monkey for dell refurb stuff

typically it's not that much expensive compared to your best eBay deals but these guys do testing and you can have dell support if you want

Yes, just look for Dell PowerEdge systems that begin with the letter "T"(ower) instead of "R"(ack).

But it looks like the T710s are significantly more expensive than the R710s.

That's correct. But there are also T410s and T610s, both of which are dual socket systems which will handle over 72gb of RAM.

Used rack systems will be cheaper than their tower equivalents nine times out of ten, just as a heads up.
