Recently, feeling the need to join in a good cause, I started folding (of course it's for the [H] team). I downloaded EMIII to see what's going on. I wanted to set it up so that my laptop monitors the other PCs over the network, however, I can't seem to get the PCs to see each other.

Here is what I have :

- D-Link DGL 4300 gaming router (set as DHCP)
- wireless Dell 9300 laptop
- custom built P4 with Win XP Pro
- custom built P4 with Win XP Home

It all runs like a champ but they don't see each other in the network. I enabled Netbios over TCP/IP and made sure they are in the same workgroup but no go. File and print sharing is enabled

I have a feeling I am forgetting something simple and I'll be kicking myself later but until then any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Firewalls?
Always check first for connectivity - ping the router, then ping each system -
If you can ping try to mount the drives of the others on the laptop, you may need to add user names and passwords to make it simpler.

FOLD ON!!

firewalls is a good thing to check

can you ping the computers and can you browse files on the other computers

I can ping the other systems. I can't browse the neighborhood nor can I map a drive. The only firewall would be the Windows based firewall. Should I disable that?

You need to make sure the Windows Firewall is set up to allow File and Printer sharing. Then, in order for EMIII to pick it up, I believe you only need to share the folder.

Edit: You really shouldn't need the Windows Firewall at all on those boxes if they are behind that router, as I just noticed when looking at the specs, it has a firewall built in. So, either enable File and Printer sharing (and then share the directory F@H is in on each computer), or disable the Windows Firewall (and again share the directory on each system), and you should be good to go.

I have seen this problem come up before when dealing with customers at work. First I would remove the Windows Firewall. It is probably the main cause of this problem. A corrupted TCP/IP stack can also cause this problem. netsh ip int reset nul Run that command to restore TCP/IP to original specs.

had the exact same problems when I started out my garden. Here is what I did:

1) turn off Windows Firewall
2) Run the Set up Home Network and make sure file sharing is on
3) If you have another firewall, allow access to the specific IP address within your network. For example, my main PC is 192.168.1.100 and my Foldix box is 192.168.1.101 so I would allow access to 192.168.1.101
4) Since you are doing XP, make sure that the directory you want to access is set to share.

Hope that helps.

Still no luck on this yet. Here's what I know for certain:

- Windows firewall disabled
- no other firewall have ever been installed
- I can ping the other PCs
- I can not find them in network neighborhood nor by doing search for PCs
- Home network was run on all the PCs.
- file and print sharing has been enabled on all and the folding folder shared.

Am I trying to do something that typicall doesn't work or is difficult to make work? Thanks for the help so far but I would greatly appreciate any other suggestions.

are they in the same workgroup? sometimes XP has a tough time seeing other comps if they are not in the same workgroup.

can u open the ip by going to IE window and typing \\ip address (like \\192.168.0.2) and get anything

most likly it will not work but just for giggles

Do you even need the NetBIOS thing on there? None of my PCs have it. Again, I am at work and can't look to far into the settings.

Did you enable read AND write access in the folder? or just read?

Can you "see" the other PCs from Windows explorer and just not EMIII? or are they not even showing up in network nieghborhood/my network places?

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

Should be just READ access...You're not putting any data in the folder....

Actually, LPerry is very adamant that write access be enables on EM3 shares. I believe that by doing that, you can allow EM3 to configure and customize the clients.

All 3 of the systems are in the same workgroup (called 'workgroup'). The shares are set with full access but I can't even see the other PCs in network neighborhood nor map a drive directly to them (not that I need to do that).

I have F@H and EMIII set up on a few systems at work (yes, I asked myself for permission) and EMIII runs great there. You don't even have to map a network drive - just put the UNC in EMIII. However, being on a domain greatly simplifies this.

Back to the home config, I am at a loss here. Is there something in the router that needs to be enabled/disabled. Maybe in the network properties on the PCs? All of the systems are (and always are) patched up to the latest Windows Updates.

This is quite baffling, but I know it will come down to something simple. It always does.

Can you access \\ip.of.comp.a from computer b? It may be that NetBIOS name resolution is broken. Doing it by IP should eliminate that. Other than that, I can't think of anything.

I 'think' I tried that in my insomnia last night, lol, but I will definately try it again.

Might be a wireless config problem. You shouldn't have to ,but did you run the wireless setup wizard? Do you have wep enabled? Can you see both computers in the dhcp clients table in your router configs? Do you have any anti-virus programs installed (you should :D ).....pc-cillan has a firewall that I have to manually add each ip to on every box to let them talk. Hope there's at least 1 good suggestion there :D

Try using

\\local.network.ip.here\

since you can ping the IP's, this will go directly to the machine to see if the service is open and letting local computers access it.

I had to do that at my father's office because for some reason, workgroups refused to work (then magically, worked like a year later when I added a 3rd laptop to the network? ). Either way, it's one work around.

I think I may have an answer...

My Network Places>>>Add a network place

Go through the wizard and see if you can see it.

This method actually worked for me. I tried this at one point early on but I must have changed something since then that has made it work now. Simply put, I mapped a network drive directly to the folding folder on another PC using that PC's IP address instead of using the name of said PC. Then I pointed EMIII to that network drive.

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestion. I hope it helps others and maybe some lurkers. Now that we know a solution does anyone have a suggestion as to why I had to make it work like this?

It's probably a browsing problem. If you're running all XP Home boxes, this is likely the problem. Adding a Linux+samba box to the notwork will probably make it a network. It sets itself at a higher priority than the Windows boxes, so it becomes Browse Master all the time, and it's better at keeping track of who's who.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

What a load....

:D

Sometimes EMIII seems to lose connection with the other PC no longer updating its progress. I know the other PC is folding properly because I can see the process in task manager. Any thoughts??

maybe the port the offending PC is connected to is losing it's connection occasionally?

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

if this is the case then they are prob not on the same workgroup. I have seen this alot. once in awhile windows trys to get smart and somehow does not have the right workgroup name

I've found that EM3 will loose access to wifi connections all the time, even rock solid ones. I remember LPerry mentioning that it was a known problem with EM3. I haven't found a way around this other than to hardwire the laptop with Cat5. I just stopped monitoring my laptop and desktop, and just go to the individual machines.

BAH! Now we might be getting somewhere. The system that I was running EMIII from is a new Dell 9300 laptop using its wireless connection. I'm not going to hardwire the LAN connection so I guess that's out. Oh well. It's still a Pentium M 1.73 folding it's core(s) off for the [H]orde.

In EMIII, Options, General Settings turn on "retry bad network connections every 5 minutes", works for me.
Every time the microwave is run the connection drops, this seems to restore it.

*smacks forehead* Now that you mention it, I recall seeing that switch but I haven't tried it yet. Will do when I get home. Stay tuned . . .
