I'm looking to setup a VMware lab. I would like to run esxi 6.

What I have:

i7 4790 (non k), h97
i5 3470, p67

4x8gb
4x4gb

3x3tb hgst hdds (getting a 4th)
2x120gb Kingston ssd
1x64gb Kingston ssd

Broadcom dual port bcm5709c
Broadcom nic (not sure the exact model)
Intel pcie nic (not sure exact model)

What would the best way to set up the storage?

Should I go 24gb in box esxi servers?

Since you listed the hardware, is it safe to assume that you're unwilling to purchase other hardware for this use?

Listing a whole bunch of VMs doesn't really tell anyone what you're intention is for the lab. Why are you going with multiple hosts? What availability do you require? How much load will be put on these VMs (do you know how much cpu/RAM you'll *actually* need on each VM)?

I am will to purchase hardware. I have about $400/500 to invest in hardware if needed.

Why are you going with multiple hosts? Because I have two. Would it be better not to?

What availability do you require? I don't need 24/7/365 up time. To be honest, if it's down the only person impacted will be me.

How much load will be put on these VMs (do you know how much cpu/RAM you'll *actually* need on each VM)? I really think the most stressful thing I'll be doing is the plex server. I was thinking vms would be setup with 2c/4gb, and about 5-8vms. Those will be mostly idle other than the plex server.

Plex will only be flexing when you are transcoding. that about the most intensive things it does.
