So I went into my bios and I decided to be conservative.

I have a P35 based gigabyte board.

266 * 9 is what is autodetected in bios.

So I set it to 400 * 6. No real overclocking, just raising memory bandwidth, no ? I dropped my memory multi (or something similar) to "2" so it showed 800mhz and matched my memory (I bought $34 ddr2-800 newegg sticks a week ago).

So I boot up, everything seems fine. Idle is a bit warmer than I expected (3-5C h igher ? ok, whatever....). I expect to be at 2.4ghz.

Voltage is unchangd...bios said 1.2875.
Cooler is the coolermaster TX2.

Could this possibly be correct??? What is a good stability test in linux?
 
Ignore what /proc/cpuinfo says, when I had my E8400 I did the same thing (lowered it to 7.5 multiplier from 9 and put the fsb at 400), and it always showed 3600- even though it wasn't actually running at that. It's using your default multiplier of 9 for whatever reason instead of using what it's actually set at.

Ah thanks. I was going to say!!!

I am going to run some benchmarks and see what I can do at 2.4+
 
You can only change the multiplyer of the Xtreme series of chips. You know, the ones that cost a grand!!! All of the rest are multiplier locked. No matter what you set in the Bios, it will not change. It is the same with AMD. Only their Black edition chips are unlocked. All the rest are locked.

If you have speed step on, it will slow down to 6 mult when idle, but quickly jump back to 9 when busy.

the multiplier is not locked. you can set it anywhere from 6-9. True the ee parts are not capped like the mainstream, but my chip runs at 400x8=3.2, not 3.6

Povray 3.7 benchmark on 64-bit linux kernel 2.6.22-14:

2400: 386.92 seconds
2800: 331.939 seconds
3200: 290.1220 seconds

the box is running at 3200 @ 1.3125v

Not sure if I should go for 3600 or not. I also need a good long term stability test for linux before I go further.

I don't know of any. My first inclination would be vmware + fah or prime95. Maybe that would run in wine? who knows.

I had the same issue where 400*8 was reading 3.6GHz in some programs like CPU-Z. Everest 4.20 however was reading it correctly.
