Currently I have an old Socket 754 machine, athlon 3000+ 2ghz.

It seriously has me contemplating an upgrade. What kind of performance boost would I see? It would leave me on 775 so when 6750 prices or maybe even a quad core drops down in 6 months I can upgrade again. I don't need top of the line really. Just want to upgrade my computer. Is a 650i board good as well, I'm way out of the loop hehe. I was looking at

Also I have a 6800GS in my computer that is AGP. I'm switching to PCI-Express with this change, what would you recommend for a semi cheap range card. It must be equal to 6800gs, but I'm not opposed to better ;). I had looked at 8600GT to replace it. How much better is it and such? The card MUST be Nvidia.

I need new processor, ram, video card, power supply, would like a case but I have a crappy one that would work. And only looking to spend at most 300-350.

$350 for just that stuff? or do you need mobo, and case to?

I would not recommend that particular CPU if you're buying today. This is because that Pentium D uses the no-longer-manufactured NetBurst architecture, with the Presler core suffering from some of the heat issues which had plagued the Prescott-core Pentium 4 processors. And it uses more power than any of the current Core 2-based dual-core processors, with lower performance to boot. In short, the Pentium D processor delivers too little real-world performance for its relatively high power consumption.

Also, that Pentium D processor in that link does not come with a CPU cooler at all. It requires one -- but you might have to spend $50.00 or more on a cooler which can even adequately cool that Pentium D. Thus, you'd be spending too much money and waste too much power for relatively low performance. Add to that the teaser $59.99 price is only after a mail-in rebate, which applies only if you make your purchase by tomorrow (you'll pay $79.99 up front). The Pentium Dual-Core E2140 and E2160 might seem more expensive than that Pentium D 925 -- but those E21x0 processors are boxed processors which already come with their own cooler (perfectly adequate as long as you don't go crazy and overclock those E21x0's to insane speeds).

I'd buy a Pentium Dual-Core E21x0 series processor instead of a Pentium D 9xx series processor in the same price range. And if you're going to pay the same amount of money on that Pentium D process plus the proper cooler, you might as well go for a Core 2 Duo E4x00 series processor.
