hl2 benchmarking

since Valve didn't seem to include any benchmark demos, i recorded a lame one.

http://www.notveryserio.us/pix/newdemo.zip (480KB)

unzip it into your half-life 2\hl2 directory

To benchmark, run HL2 and type playdemo newdemo in the console or start HL2 with the command line parameters (recommended since caching is enabled and multiple resoltions can be tested easily):
-mat_preloadshaders -preload -console -toconsole +timedemoquit newdemo
or
-mat_preloadshaders -preload -console -toconsole -width 1024 -height 768 +timedemoquit newdemo

If you're running HL2 through steam, you will have to go to half-life 2 properties, and change the launch options to either line above (replacing the resolution on the second version if desired). If you don't have steam, add one of the lines above to your shortcut target after hl2.exe.

When you run HL2 with those options, the benchmark will run and exit out. Look at sourcebench.csv in the HL2 directory for the results.

My benchmarks:
reflect world, dx9, all other options highest, sound on

Mobility Radeon 9600 128MB (laptop in sig), Cat 4.12 beta, trilinear, no AA, 2 channel sound enabled
800x600 71.5fps
1024x768 46.2fps
1280x768 39.4fps
1600x1200 19.7fps

6600GT 128MB (desktop in sig), 66.93 WHQL, 5.1 sound enabled
trilinear, no AA/8xAF, 2xAA/8xAF, 4xAA
800x600 98.5fps/97.7fps/96.3fps
1024x768 95.4fps/90.3fps/82.9fps
1280x768 90.7fps/81.3fps/72.0fps
1600x1200 56.1fps/47.3fps/34.7fps

6600GT 128MB (desktop in sig), 67.02 beta, 5.1 sound enabled
trilinear, no AA/8xAF, 2xAA/8xAF, 4xAA
800x600 93.2fps/93.2fps/93.1fps
1024x768 90.3fps/85.9fps/81.9fps
1280x768 86.8fps/80.3fps/71.5fps
1600x1200 56.1fps/47.2fps/34.7fps

If someone wants to record a better demo, I can host it. :D

very nice. Ill check it out with the system in my sig when I get home.

bump

i've had a few dozen downloads of the benchmark, but no one else has posted results. :p

Where exactly does it list the fps? the whole file has a load of numbers kinda jumbled around in it.

btw anyone can record a timedemo

you can easily make your own timedemo in HL2

go to the keyboard settings under options and click on advanced, then enable the devloper console ~

bring it down in a game and type record nameofdemo

you can name your timedemo anything, it will start recording

to stop it bring down the console and type stop

you have then just created a timedemo

you can play it back by typing timedemo nameofdemo

when its done it will give you the AVG FPS

you can also bind keys by using the bind command, so you can for example do bind r "record nameofdemo" and bind t stop

etc....

ive downloaded it and ran it but i dont get a sourcebench file that i can find anywhere to u have to run it with those paramiters to get it to bench ??? :p

edit that heh was doing playdemo instead of timedemo
nvr mnd :p

1024x768 79fps with 5frame variance

9800pro
768megs ram
2500XP-m @ 2225
onboard sound
msi k7n2 delta2 plat.

I'll try to run this myself, but I mean with my current videocard doesn't exactly help alot lol

1600x1200, 4xAA / 16xAF, High + Reflect World : 80 FPS
2048x1536, 4xAA / 16xAF, High + Reflect World : 62 FPS

4.12 Beta's.

EDIT : 5.1 Sound on this as well (+IRC and Azureus... guess I should reboot and run a fresh bench :p )

frames/sec framerate variability totaltime (sec)
81 9.1 37.1

edit: all setting maxed out!

-applaunch 220 -mat_preloadshaders -preload -console -toconsole -width 1280 -height 1024 +timedemoquit newdemo

NOTE: I found that you have to have the -applaunch 220 in order to make a shortcut to the hl2.exe work

That's only if you're running Steam.exe instead of HL2.exe.

Interesting results pxc, thanks for all the hard work!! :)
