I'm considering a Serial ATA Hitachi Desktar right now, but I was wondering how realible they are. Anybody have any good/bad experiences? I'm aware of their performance, I'm just worried about failing.

My second choice would be a WD Caviar.
 
If you handle them properly, and if you don't get a drive from a bad batch, then the Hitachis will last as long as other drives from other companies. Remember not to submit the drive to shock (like banging it against the case), which is one of the top installation errors and causes the drive head to scratch against the disc, and as you use it, the scratch will eventually balloon into a bigger problem like drive failure.

Just be aware of the weirdo sound the Deskstars make when the drive heads park.

Here's a question I forgot to ask in my original post. Does it matter what type of S-ATA cable I buy?
 
Hitachi is IBM harddrives so they do have some kind of a shoddy past. 60 GXP was a bit better though not much than the 75 GXP though.
 
I thought IBM sold their Deskstar department to Hitachi, so Hitachi is working independently of IBM makeing their own hard drives.

Plus, I haven't been hearing of any Hitachi incidents similar to the Deathstar fiasco.
 
Well I got my IBM 60 GXP rma:d for an Excelstor. So I think Hitachi robbed IBM from all death stars hehe.

Hitachi bought IBM harddrives yes. With that they bought the right to sell ghe 60 GXP and 180 GXP and all other IBM hard drives.

But I still want to know whether it matters what type of Serial ATA cables I buy? I saw one in Best Buy not too long ago for 20 bucks. Newegg has them for almost nothing. Is there any difference?

Also, to power SATA drives do I have to buy special cables? Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I don't know much about SATA ;)
 
Any sata cable will work fine. I think most, if not all, hitachi drives have the old style molex connection as well as the newer sata type.
 
well, bestbuy sells at inflated price (like almost everyhting else). they should be fine from newegg.
