History repeats itself...

huh?

WTF is the point in that? those cards are no better than the 6800GT you have now? just overclock the thing to ultra speeds and save for a proper upgrade.

Nvidia, being the class act company they are, introduced bugs into the NF3/6xxx combo that causes random stuttering and pausing durring gameplay. This has never been fixed, and infact Nvidia has never admitted to it, though there are PAGES upon PAGES of threads all over the internet describing it.

They also dont seem to understand that image quality is important.

Hell, id rather lose performance and gain a steady framerate and better IQ, though if i get a X800XL ill get better performance anyway! Win-Win.

Is it me or does this look like 6800GT vs. X800PRO all over again?

I was thinking more along the lines of the FX series vs. 9700 series myself.

7800GT > X1800XL
Is it me or does this look like 6800GT vs. X800PRO all over again? (Except this time the Nvidia part is much more widely available and $100 cheaper). Not a huge difference, but the 7800GT definitely seems to have the edge.

From some of the reviews, it also looks like the X1800XT has the edge over the 7800GTX, similar to the x800xtpe vs 6800U. Of course, just like last year the difference is not that huge and the x1800xt won't be available for over a month - plus we don't know the performance gains a 512mb 7800gtx will yield yet. And again, the 7800GTX will likely be ~$100 cheaper than the X1800XT due to the price drops from it being out so long.

Seems like history has repeated itself in terms of performance :)

I guess my memory is a bit different. When ATI first launched the X800 series, the X800 Pro reviewed very well. It also had some decent availability before the GT or Ultra. It wasn't until later that the 6800 GT really started to stretch its legs in terms of performance. Nobody wanted to settle for only 12 pipelines, though, and when the GT started to show up in mass and easily clocked to Ultra speeds, it became an easy choice for many.

As I recall, the superior feature set was not the main reason people initially bought 6800's... they just got tired of waiting on the 16 pipeline X800 cards. Only later, did the SM 3.0 thing become really a heated argument.

But, that's just my recollection. ;)
