Highest PPD for a laptop??

I'm kind of in the market for a new laptop. The one I'm currently using is not going to be around anymore. When browsing around I was curious what laptop out there would net the highest PPD. So... what is it? What do you guys think? Or better yet, what combination of laptop GPU and CPU will net me the highest PPD? Also, what would be the PPD I could acheive with a laptop? Then I can go from there, and narrow down my search. Any advice or tips are greatly welcomed. Thanks for all your help guys!! :D
 
gpu wise id go with a dedicated graphics.. though at most your looking at maybe 3000-3500ppd on a high end dedicated graphics.. as for cpu it really depends on the cooling.. though i wouldnt recommend running an smp client on a laptop.. unless you want to fry the cpu.. tried doing it with a couple of my laptops and its caused more issues with the laptops then its done good.. fried the motherboard on my toshiba satellite.. and the other laptop now has a short with the ac adapter on the motherboard..
 
Haha, well thanks for the advice 84gthatch :p I already have a folding rig, but since I'm looking for a new laptop, I want it to be able to contribute as much as possible :)
 
I can't say what would be the best setup for ppd but I can say I've had my dual core dell running 2 classic clients nearly 24/7 for about a year. I have not had any issues with it. On good days it makes 800-900ppd but sometimes only 300ppd depending on wu.
 
Anything less than a mobile 8800 or 4870 will give you too little points output to be worth it. As for the CPU, most mobile chips will give you fairly similar performance. I'd say maybe 1000-1500PPD at most using the WinSMP client, based on my experiences (although to be fair, I haven't folded on any really fast laptops).
 
Well partly the reason i suggested what i did is because i've noticed when i fold with laptops it tends to not bode well for there life on this planet;) so i figure unless you need a gaming notebook just get a little guy and buy another video card tada 5k ppd ;)
 
Well the laptop is basically going to be an internet machine/music player/email checker, so I don't need the high end stuff, but I'd still like it to be able to fold well :) I could do both... get a laptop to fold, and buy another GPU ;)

I bought my lappy in November. I bought it for my business. It's an Asus G71-Q1. It was (already, no longer sold) a good folding purchase for me. It comes with an Intel QX9300 (capable of doing 2.8 on stock everything) and an nVidia 9700m GT. I get about 5K PpD out of it. I needed the four coures for run multiple VMs without issue. I needed a laptop because I generally travel 100% for work. I wanted a decent video card so I could game while sitting in my hotel room :D

But others have said, you're probably best off getting a decent laptop and building a folding rig. For the difference in price between my laptop and a more off the shelf decent laptop, I could have built an entire dedicated boxen.

 

Yeah, I can dig it brother capreppy, but you gots to admit a laptop is much easier than carrying around a dedicated folding desktop rig (plus they'ed probably charge you extra for the room a dedicated desktop boxen takes up :rolleyes:)

haha, just don't tell the hotel staff you're going to be bringing in 6 boxen, then after you check in, sneak your folding rigs in through the backdoor.... Voila! Free electricity :D Just hide them in the shower if you trip a circuit breaker, and they come to ask why ;)
 
Or just tell them that you have a couple computers in your car that you are worried about people breaking into, and that you're going to 'store' them in your room for safe-keeping :)
 
My rigs stay home. Only lappy travels. Too hard tto move server cabiner.

I think I get around 2k-2.5k out of my laptop with 8800M-GTS. I tried running SMP on it but that machine only has a 1.8Ghz CPU and there were problems with it. Since I took the CPU folding off It has been rock-solid for several months. This thing is big and heavy and hot, though. I wanted a desktop replacement/gamer because it was my hold-over rig for a year that I did not have a working desktop. If you plan on traveling much at all don't get one of these behemoths.
