High Idle Temps

My XFX Radeon HD 4770 idle temp is about 62° to 64°C and has been doing so for about a month now. According to GPU-Z, the GPU Temp DISPIO, MEMIO and SHADERCORE are at 64°, 78° and 75°C respectively. My PSU is 500W so that ought to cut it for power. My CPU is on full load because I run Prime95, but I don't think that would cause high GPU temps; a small correlation at best. I have plenty of intake and exhaust fans. Any suggestions as to cool it besides running it's fan at 100%? If not, do old(er) cards just heat up?
 
That's high from my experience. Does it have the stick BIOS? I'd test your power supply just to be sure, but it sounds like the GPU is going out.
 
Depending on the card's cooling and room temp, a 4770 should idle anywhere from 45-60 degrees on average, your temps are slightly high but not alarmingly so.

Ya, it has stock BIOS, including stock speeds. According to CCC, when GPU activity is at 0%, the clock is at 250MHz. Of course, it jumps back to stock speeds (750MHz) once the GPU gets a little active. When I do OC, it pushes 69-70°C at 885MHz and 920MHz on GPU and Memory clocks respectively when I play AC: Brotherhood and Starcraft 2, but both games hardly push it.
 
Well, in all honesty, I doubt there is anything (short of spending money on it) that you can do. I'd just use that bad boy till it dies, or sell it to someone knowing that it runs hot (and may be dying), then use that money toward a new GPU.

I wouldn't be too alarmed by this, unless the temp is getting up over 95C, there shouldn't be much of a problem. You can check to see what your fan speed is while it is at idle. Also there could just be a little extra heat in the case too when you are loading down the CPU with Prime95 (usually only a few degrees). Even if the GPU isn't being stressed, it may just be heating up because of the ambient temp in the case and the possible heat on the MB. I don't think this is any sign at all that the card is dying. If you are having no performance issues, then there really shouldn't be much to worry about.

You could load up a benchmark program that stresses the GPU and see what the temps are at load. If the load temps are not going above 95C, then I wouldn't worry at all. If they do, you could possibly look at some aftermarket fans for the GPU, or just run the fan higher and see if that works.
 
3DMark06 pushed it to 72°C, while FurMark leveled off at 84°C and fan never did reach 100%. I haven't cleaned the GPU fan in such a long time, maybe it's time I give it a good cleaning, new thermal paste, etc. I'm sure it'll help somewhat, but I don't think it is the root of the problem as I'd expect higher temps after running those benchmarks. Running 3DMark06 only saw an increase of 8-10°C... weird.
 
I would try cleaning out the fan and dust in the case and cards and then test them again see if that helps. 84 is not that bad at all at full load. The 3dMark06 probably isn't stressing the card nearly as much as the newer FurMark. Plus if the fan is on auto, it may only be running at 10% at idle and then maybe up to 50% while 3dMark06 is running. So remember that it is actively trying to cool more at the same time. If you ran the fan at the same speeds at idle as well as when 3dMark06 is running, you may see a bigger differential.
 
I had a 4770 that would idle at 55 in a open test bench. I would say that depending on your case and cooling that those temps arent terrible.
 
my old card (8800gt) idled in the 50s or 60s and I used to think was my case.

My current card (gtx 460) idles in the low 30s in the same case and runs cooler under load than my old card was idle.

conclusion? some cards probably designed badly in terms of cooling or possible manufacturing defects with poor heatsink contacts.
 
Fan idled at 50% when the idle temps were 62°-64°C. However, it is only a week later and my new idle temps are lingering at 69°-70°C with fan at 55%. I definitely think it is time for a cleaning. Hopefully that will keep the card from crapping out soon. When GPU is on full load and I put the fan on 100%, temps never go higher than 84°C. Either it needs a cleaning or the card is on its way out. Hopefully the former and not the latter. I'm taking off for Christmas for a while, I'll let you know how the story ends when I get back and clean it in Jan.
 
So over two years later and I finally came back to tell the rest of the story. I cleaned it out and temps fell right back to 42°C. Cheers! She idles at about 65°C unless I clean her every 4-6 months. Dusty house means dusty video card I suppose.
