High FPS Microstuttering Question

Peeps say that sli/crossfire systems often give their users trouble around 30fps. Apparently, microstuttering makes 30fps look look like ~20fps. I'm wondering if this remains true for the higher end of the fps spectrum. If my sli/crossfire system is getting 100~ fps, will it SEEM like I'm getting 80~?

Now, many people will say that microstuttering is only noticeable at around 30fps, but this statement confuses me. See, I can hardly tell the difference between 85 and 100 fps, but I can EASILY tell the difference between 30fps and 15fps. Is microstuttering only noticeable at lower FPS because decreased frame rates are only noticeable at those levels? Or do the adverse effects of microstuttering literally dissapear when you get to the higher levels (100~)?

tl;dr - If I want 100fps with a sli/crossfire system, do I need to shoot for 120 fps to counteract microstuttering, or is 100fps truly 100fps?
 
If you use a 60hz monitor, you wouldnt be able to distinguish 85 and 100fps anyway, and the same is true of crossfire. Microstuttering becomes much less obvious beyond 60fps, and I don't think I've ever noticed it beyond 75.
 
Thanks for the reply, but this doesn't actually address my question. Are you unable to notice microstuttering simply because it's harder to notices FPS changes at higher frame rates, or do the effects of microstuttering dissipate at those levels?

Also, I have a 120hz monitor.
 
Well, I think it does - I can tell microstuttering is there below 60fps, i.e. 60 is not 60, but beyond 75 I can't see it, which means that the frame rate is what it says it is. On a 120Hz monitor I don't see why it should be any different, but I don't have first hand experience with them, they don't make them for 2560x1600 (yet) :p

At higher fps it is still possible to notice MS especially with a 120hz monitor. But most games usually become increasingly cpu bottlenecked at high framerates which helps space out the frames uniformly and reduce the perception of MS.

I was a "professional" gamer for many years, had many different configurations of processor and video card vendors, many different RAM, motherboard, and hard drive configurations with a large amount of differing mice, and was never able to truly rid myself of microstuttering, that was noticeable to me.

Most people aren't going to be able to tell the difference between 60 and 120 fps on a 60hz monitor, much less a 120hz monitor. Don't take advice from anyone, much less me, besides this. Try to find what feels best for you. You won't be happy with any less, not that I can tell you what the magic combo is.

i've had like 4 multi gpu setups, when my 4870x2 died, i went to a 6970.

To this day, I still don't know what microstuttering is.
 
I don't think many people have walked by a huge selection of monitors before. 60 hz compared to 120 hz and beyond is night and day. I will never buy a TV sub 120hz in my life now that I have my 47" Vizio.

Did you try using 1 gfx card?
 
Yes, there are. Uneven frame distribution will (in theory) always be there while AFR is used (but it's also dependent on the game engine). At higher fps the unevenness will get less and less noticeable, but if you can see the difference between 60 and 120fps on one GPU, then you probably will also see the difference between 120fps@SLI/CF and 120fps on one GPU.

I'm well aware of the difference with 120hz displays - but looking at TVs when they're showing 24fps or 30fps video isn't quite the same as comparing PC monitors being fed at their native refresh rate. Still, I would probably buy a 120Hz display if they actually existed at my resolution (assuming they were still to the same standard) - until they get round to making use of the full spec of Displayport, not going to happen sadly... :(
 
Thing is, microstuttering is a perception problem and thus varies from person to person.

Worst case scenario, fraps shows 60fps, so each card is actually rendering 30fps, but let's assume that for some odd reason the 2nd card finishes work much faster than the first, so it's frame instead of being smack in the middle of frame 1 and 3, it is closer to frame 1, depending on your perception you may notice the uneven distribution and will "feel" a lower fps than what is actually being displayed.

And that unevenness makes you feel also that the cadence of the action is off, and hence, the name, microstutter, as you will feel 2 fast frames, stop, 2 fast frames, stop, 2 fast frames, stop...

At lower fps that stop will feel even longer, and thus will be easier to notice it.
 
Absolutely, not everyone notices microstutter, and if you're not able to notice it, you definitely shouldn't go looking for it :)
 
Everyone notices it unless you are getting over 120fps. It's a reduction in perceived fps verses reported fps. You might not notice the stuttering/unevenness though. If you really want to notice the stuttering/unneveness look at the credits roll while microstuttering. Similar to if you look at the credits on a blu-ray roll on a 60hz TV.
 
First off everyone can definitely see ms. We are all humans and have the same capabilities only some are more fussy than others. Microstutter is simply perceived as lower visible framerate than what's expect from fraps counter. If you say you can't see ms its more likely you have low tolerance threshold for framerate. Also notice those people who are not bothered by ms have always been multi gpus since a few generations back. They have no reference to what should a certain framerate feel like on one gpu then obviously they won't have a problem.

You do know that 120Hz and 240Hz TVs do not get more than 60Hz from the video source, right?
